Carter’s grandson shared the news that the former president and his wife are slowly but surely making the transition to the afterlife. Carter is 98 years old and served one term as president who is said to be the grandson of the 39th President PEOPLE.
Georgia, the couple’s home is “calm and quiet” these days. “My grandparents were always entertainers,” Josh Carter said PEOPLE. “But now we are the ones who have to be entertained. It’s different, it’s just a different era.”
In February, the ailing former president decided to stop medical intervention and enter hospice care “to spend the rest of his time at home with his family.” After the announcement, the family shared that Rosalynn, 96 has dementia.

Even though the family admits he struggles in his old age, he’s still Jimmy. “He’s still totally Jimmy Carter,” Josh said. “He’s just tired. I mean he’s almost 99, but he totally gets it [how many well wishes he’s received] and have felt that love.”
For Grandma Rosalynn, “She still knows who we are, for the most part – that we’re family.” After a good night’s sleep, his memory returned a little. “My grandmother can still form new memories.”
