Pallavi Dey’s Death Mystery
Bengali television actress Pallavi Dey was found dead in her rented flat in Garfa, Kolkata, on 15 May 2022. It was Sagnik who first found Pallavi’s body hanging from the ceiling fan of her room. He immediately informed the police and Pallavi’s parents about it. According to several sources, Sagnik and Pallavi had a heated argument on the morning of 15 May 2022 after which Chakraborty went out to buy cigarettes. When he got home, he found the door locked from the inside. Sagnik breaks the door and finds Pallavi hanging from the ceiling fan of her room. On reaching the scene, the police rushed Pallavi to MR Bangur Hospital, Kolkata, where she was declared brought dead by doctors. Based on the initial investigation, the police suspect it was a case of suicide. In a media conversation, the investigating officer in the case said,
The actor was found hanging from the ceiling fan with the help of a sheet. The incident happened at about 9.30 am. A case of unusual death has been registered.”
He further said,
Prima facie, it appears to be a case of suicide. However, a final conclusion can be made only after the post-mortem report is available. We have started an investigation after filing a case of unusual death.”
Pallavi’s Parents Accuse
After Pallavi’s death, her parents suspect foul play. They accused Sagnik of cheating Pallavi financially and informed the police that Sagnik had forced Pallavi to pay for the apartment they (Pallavi and Sagnik) bought in Rajarhat. During the media chat, Pallavi’s father Nilu Dey said,
My daughter loves Sagnik very much. Sagnik uses a luxury car that he gave her. Pallavi used to give expensive gifts to Sagnik on different occasions. They have three joint bank accounts.”
Her parents told the police that Pallavi and Saknik had bought a flat in Newtown for Rs 60 lakh for which Pallavi paid the money. However, the flat was registered in the name of Sagnik’s father. They also accused him of mental disorder and cheating on Pallavi. Talking to a mediaperson, Pallavi’s father said,
His partner had a registered marriage with another person two years ago and we found out about this six months ago. There was another girl he was close to and it often caused problems in their relationship. We don’t know who saw him hanging.”
Some of Pallavi’s relatives alleged that Pallavi had a fixed deposit of Rs 15 lakh in her name, whose name was allegedly Sagnik. Although her post-mortem report revealed that she committed suicide, Pallavi’s father filed a complaint against Sagnik Chakraborty at the Garfa police station accusing her of mental and physical abuse. He claims that no one was around when Pallavi was found dead.
Denying all the allegations made by Pallavi’s parents and relatives, Sagnik’s mother said,
They used to live together. Although we don’t fully support it, we allow them because they are adults. Several times I have asked Sagnik to live somewhere else and start living together as soon as they get married. They don’t have any major problems. I don’t know what happened.”
Further, dismissing all allegations that Pallavi paid for Sagnik’s luxury car and flat bought in Newtown, Chakraborthy’s mother said,
The accusation is baseless. Pallavi did not pay for the car or the flat. I gave Sagnik Rs. 9 lakh to buy the luxury car. The flat in Newtown was also bought by us instead of Pallavi.”

Following a complaint by Pallavi’s father, Sagnik was called to the Garfa police station for questioning. He was interrogated by the police for about 18 hours and according to some sources there were several contradictions in his statement. He has also withheld important information about his employment and his joint financial investments with Dey. Speaking to media persons, a police officer said, “
We asked him about his job because he claimed that he works with a data center. We asked him when he had attended the office last after we found many transactions from his account to multiple people. Transactions range from Rs 25,000 to Rs 30,000. He claimed he had stopped going to the office a week ago due to personal reasons. We spoke to several people he has been transferring money to recently on a regular basis. They alleged that Chakraborty was paying them regularly and that he used Shane’s name in the office. He had stopped going to the office when Kolkata Police, Bidhannagar Police and CID had started raids against fake call centers across the city. Naturally, we are investigating his possible connection with any fake call center.”
Meanwhile, the police also interrogated Pallavi’s maid, Salima Sardar who revealed some surprising facts about Sagnik. Reportedly, Salima told the police that Sagnik’s rumored girlfriend Oindrila had visited Pallavi’s flat in his absence several times.

After questioning Chakraborty thoroughly for about 18 hours, the Garfa police arrested him on the evening of 17 May 2022. According to Atul V., deputy commissioner of police in-charge of the south suburban division of the Kolkata police, Sagnik Chakraborty has been charged under IPC sections related to cheating, criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy and misappropriation of property. He further stated that Chakraborty’s arrest was based on a financial fraud committed by him and it was not related to Pallavi’s murder.
