Sailor Brinkley-Cook Opens Up About Clinical Depression: ‘My Mind Was Burning’

Sailor Brinkley-Cook in conjunction with World Mental Health Day which was celebrated last week, took to Instagram to detail her struggle with her mental health.

The blonde model shared a moving story about her struggles with depression during her teenage years, opening up about her past traumas in a lengthy post.

Brinkley-Cook previously revealed in 2020 that she struggled with “body dysmorphia” and an eating disorder in the past, which caused her doubts for a while before she finally learned to love and accept herself fully.

The 24-year-old model opened up to her more than 192,000 followers on Instagram, where she detailed her journey dealing with depression and anxiety.

Brinkley-Cook shared a photo of herself lounging in bed with her dog before revealing a long letter delivering her message to the world. She looked very somber as she lay in bed and cuddled up with her dog while letting her hair down and wearing no make-up.

The next slide featured a long, carefully written note, giving a detailed description of his battle with the disease. He begins by detailing his first panic attack as a child.

In her words, “I remember my first panic attack. I must have been 11 or 12. I ran to my mom’s room, thinking I was having an allergic reaction. I couldn’t breathe and it felt like my throat was getting smaller by the second.”

He explained how his mind made the problem worse and how the disease began to creep in.

“My mind could run so I ran so fast to try and catch him that I lost my balance and fell. I watched life unfold around me while my anxiety, heavy as a magic block, held me to the ground, struggling to get back on my feet and rejoin the race.”

He went on to state when the depression came about and when it happened, writing it happened when he moved to college.

“I overthink every social interaction I have. I turned down a job because an overwhelming sadness came out of nowhere,” said Brinkley-Cook. “I failed to remember memories that my friends could remember. I couldn’t make up my mind, not even the smallest thing about how much milk I wanted in my coffee. “

The 24-year-old went on to detail how he became uncontrollable, finding it difficult to contain his joy while believing he “could do something more or less.” She explained, “I bite myself every day. Some days will be unlivable because of the discomfort I feel inside myself. My mind is on fire.”

The former “Dancing With the Stars” contestant revealed that she was later diagnosed with “anxiety and depression” when she was 17. The model added that she didn’t get a therapist until she was 21. He also didn’t start taking his medication until he was 23.

He, however, revealed that his healing process began when he was just 24 years old, which brought him happiness. “Today I am happy. I work hard on projects I’m proud of. I have a social circle filled with beautiful and inspiring people, who I love to spend my time with.”

Brinkley-Cook also points out a piece of useful information that the world should take seriously, “Mental health is just as important as physical health. It took me years of hard fighting to finally accept I needed help. Once I asked for help and was honest with myself about how I was feeling and what I was doing to deal with it, my life changed. Once I stopped pretending to be happy, I found myself feeling truly happy.

The model concludes by stating that happiness for her comes from living an “authentic life” before finally crediting family, friends, professionals and herself for helping her get this far.
