Salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupe rages across 15 states

Dozens of people in 15 states have become ill after contracting salmonella from cantaloupes included in the recent recall, according to US health officials.

At least 43 people in 15 states have been infected in a salmonella outbreak, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday. Seventeen of them were hospitalized.

Several brands of whole and pre-cut cane and pre-cut fruit were recalled last week after it was suspected they might be contaminated.

This includes Malichita brand whole melons sold between Oct. 16. and Oct. 23, Vinyard brand pre-cut watermelon sold between Oct. 30 and Nov. 10 and pre-cut and whole ALDI fruit products with best-by dates between Oct. 27 and Oct. 31

Consumers with the recalled fruit are urged to dispose of it immediately and investigators are working to identify any additional watermelon products that may have been contaminated.

Canadian officials are investigating an outbreak involving the same type of salmonella found in Malichita brand cantaloupe.

The number of people sickened in the outbreak is likely to be higher than reported so far and states without known infections could be affected. Symptoms can take days to show, and it typically takes three to four weeks to determine if a case is related to the outbreak.

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Illness usually lasts four to seven days. Salmonella can cause serious, and sometimes fatal, infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
