Sarah Shahi Reminisces About Her Time As Billie On ‘Sex/Life’

It’s no secret that actress Sarah Shahi really enjoyed her time portraying Billie on the Netflix show “Sex/Life.”

Although the series was canceled after the second season, Shahi made sure the memories lived on long after the last episode was watched. She recently took to Instagram to share some behind-the-scenes photos of her time as the sexy and often confused, but relatable Billie.

Shahi can relate to Billie’s life more than many people might realize. She has discussed the parallels between her and her character’s life during various interviews in the past, and recently shared an essay with Glamor about her time on the show and how her life mirrors Billie’s.

“My transformation started in December 2019, the month before I became Sex/LifeBillie Mann. Years of frustration came to a head. Years of feeling stuck and lost, swimming in an endless ocean of sadness,” he revealed.

“In our modern world, mothers are expected to raise our children as if we do not work, and work as if we do not have children. I’m married, have three beautiful, healthy children, and feel like I’m living for everyone but me. I wake up every day just racing against the clock. I make breakfast, pack lunches, run errands, come back, clean the kitchen, maybe have enough time for the gym or a little work, take a shower, pick up pickup, help with homework, make dinner, take a bath, put the kids to bed- child, crawl into bed, and repeat. I came last, and I’m used to it. Although I have always been a working actress, my ambitions have been overshadowed by my duties as a wife and mother.”

Shahi’s time on the show was transformational for her. Billie helps him find the courage he desperately needs to change his life. He wrote about his “alter ego” in the Instagram caption.

“My alter ego. A multi-layered, very complex hurricane, with a character I can describe. The saint and the sinner are wrapped in messy pink bows. This show is more than just another show. It changed the direction of my life. It released the part of my heart that I had kept hidden all this time. It helped me find my truth. I broke open. Finally.”

And now, even after the end of the show, Shahi shared some behind-the-scenes pictures she took that helped her remember such an important time in her life.

She shared that “nursing rigs always take a while to get special effects” in an IG Story.

And in another, he shared something that many viewers of the show may not have noticed. “These are not my breasts…it takes about 3/4 of an hour every morning for our prosthetics team to put them on. I wear it in any sex scene with Cooper or if I have to show off my breasts while breastfeeding.”

“This newfound courage gave me so much ownership of who I was—it was empowering. I no longer run from my truth; I have lived it. This newfound commitment to myself danced into all areas of my life, including the bedroom,” she wrote in her essay.

Her essay goes on to explain a little more about how her role as Billie helped her change her own life. She ends her essay with a message to all women.

“As women, we are always told—and sometimes forced—to keep our heads down, not make noise, accept things as they are. Desire is a life-giving gift from the universe. I pray that Billie Mann serves as a big, fat middle finger to every society, system and person that brings us down. We will not lie down and be taken advantage of. We will not be silent. We will not accept such a thing just because it is the status quo. We are here to live as our true selves and do everything we love. It’s going to be a mess! But revel in the mess, make a little trouble out there, and do it on behalf of women everywhere.”
