Sarla Maheshwari was born in 1954 (age 69; in 2023). He completed his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Hindi at the University of Delhi. He is also pursuing a Ph.D. at Delhi University. While studying Ph.D. in 1976, he auditioned to become an announcer on Doordarshan.

In October 1986, she returned to India with her husband. In 1988, he rejoined Doordarshan and became an icon of the news industry. He continued to work at Doordarshan until 2005.
