The “Black Widow” star made an appearance on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” on Monday, where she shared a funny backstory about the unique name for her son. During the interview, the award-winning actress discussed with host Kelly Clarkson how quickly her son is growing up.
She shared that the little one is around 14 or 15 months old but still has that baby smell that she loves. Johansson was then asked how she came up with the name Cosmo. The 37-year-old mother jokingly replied, “We just threw a bunch of letters.”

He then went on to express how he and his friends felt about the decision, “I just thought it was really cool, and our friends all loved it.” However, such a unique name is not suitable for a person. Before the birth of Cosmo, Jost’s mother continued to persuade the couple to change their chosen name.
Cosmo’s grandmother called several times hoping that her name would be changed. He continued to suggest several versions of the name, but the couple stuck with the name Cosmo.
“Colin’s mom had a harder time with him,” said the five-time Golden Globe nominee. “He kept suggesting another version of it, and I was like, ‘No, he’s already here, he’s already out.’ “
The actor, however, did not reveal what his mother-in-law hated about the name during the interview. It was a unifying moment on the show for Clarkson, and the “Under the Skin” cast as both of their daughters were named after the flower. They later realized the connection between the two names of Johansson’s children.
“I like that, though, because your daughter is Rose,” Clarkson said. “I love them both flowers! My kids hate plants and how much I love them… but I love flowers and plants, and I think they’re pretty cool!”
The “Avengers: Endgame” actor confirmed the connection between his daughter’s name and his son’s name. In her words, “They are both flowers. Not many people make that connection. Cosmo is a very sweet little flower that comes in different shades of orange and yellow.” He then concludes by saying Rose likes the name too.
Jost’s Mother Wasn’t By Name At First
This is not the first time Johansson and Jost’s names have been the topic of discussion. Last October, the “Saturday Night Live” writer, during an appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” recounted her mother’s reaction to her son’s name.

The comedian backed up Johansson’s story by saying her mother called several times to confirm if that was really her grandson’s name and even suggested Jost and Johansson change the name to “Cosimo.
For Cosmo’s grandmother, the name will definitely grow on her, but not without outside influence. Jost’s mother, who lives on Staten Island, finally found closure with the name when she began interacting with her Italian neighbors and discovered some of them carried the name.
The couple, who first met when the “Lucy” star hosted “SNL” in 2006, welcomed their first child together in August 2021.
