Scott Frost is said to be joining the Iowa Hawkeyes after being released by the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Despite spending nearly five years at Nebraska, Frost was unable to guide the team to significant wins, leading to his firing in September 2022. Fans are now speculating about Frost’s new job with the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Scott Andrew Frost, born January 4, 1975, is a former American football coach and player. The Wood River High School graduate began his college career at Stanford before transferring to Nebraska. The 1996 Big 12 Offensive Freshman helped the Cornhuskers win two national championships (1995 and 1997).
Scott was drafted by the New York Jets in the third round (67th overall) in the 1998 NFL Draft. He later played for the Cleveland Browns, Green Bay Packers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After his playing career, Frost went on to coach at Nebraska, Kansas State, Northern Iowa, Oregon, and UCF. Throughout his coaching career, the 2017 AAC Coach of the Year has earned the AP College Football Coach of the Year award, the Home Depot Coach of the Year and the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award.
Will the Iowa Hawkeyes Offer Scott Frost a New Job?
Scott Frost, the former Nebraska Cornhuskers Football head coach, will reportedly return to coaching earlier than planned. Furthermore, he may not be done creating difficulties for his old club. Despite the controversy surrounding Frost’s departure from Nebraska, he is still highly regarded and may soon land a job as an offensive coordinator. People believe Scott may end up with the Iowa Hawkeyes. This will create a rivalry between him and his old squad.
However, Iowa’s more conventional offensive approach may not seem like a good fit for Frost. The recent termination of Brian Ferentz lends credence to his chances of making the roster. This could lead to a coaching change and a chance for Frost to get back. Despite reports, Scott’s decision to join Iowa is still not official.
Why Was Scott Frost Fired?
Scott accepted the head football coaching position at his alma mater, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on December 2, 2017. Shortly after he took over the head coaching job, the squad suffered its worst football season in a row. Frost’s 2019 season started well, but it didn’t last long. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, Nebraska’s 2020 season has been shortened to an eight-game conference schedule.
Furthermore, the squad only won three games that season, defeating Penn State, Purdue, and Rutgers. Nebraska Athletic Director Trev Alberts said in 2021 that Frost would return for the 2022 season, albeit with a $1 million reduction in compensation and a lower buyout. Scott also fired four offensive assistant coaches that day. Nebraska finished the season 3-9.
The squad never fared well during his first four seasons as the head coach at Nebraska. Frost is 5-20 in games decided by 8 points or less, 10-25 in Big Ten Conference games, and 0-14 against ranked opponents. Scott became the first Nebraska head coach since Bill Jennings (1957-1961) to go without a winning season. Ultimately, Nebraska could take no more and fired Scott on September 11, 2022. It was the day after the Cornhuskers’ 45-42 home loss to Georgia Southern.
