Speaking with podcast hosts, “Tim Murdock” and “Matt Emert,” Williamson praised Campbell for his role as Prescott while looking at the reasons for his decision not to continue with the film due to a salary dispute with the studio.
He said, “I have a lot of respect for his opinion. I know where he’s coming from. I know him well. I love and adore him, and that’s what he does. It’s perfect for him.”
He went on to state, “I love everybody involved with ‘Scream’ and all I can say is pay him the money. Yeah, you heard it, everybody. That’s what I’m going to do; I’m going to give him that.”
As fans may know, Campbell did not reprise his role for the sixth installment, which premiered in March of this year and grossed $168 million at the global box office. Williamson added that he hoped the Canadian actor would be paid the same as every other actor in the series. He said, “One day, they’ll figure it all out.”
In March, during the premiere of “Scream VI,” the screenwriter touched on the “Wild Things” cast taking a break from movies after more than two decades.
“There’s always room for him to come back,” Williamson revealed at the event. He added, “You know, the door is wide open, and if he wants to come play with us again, we’re here.”
The producer also clarified that there is no bad blood between him and the actress. She revealed that Campbell is her best friend and keeps in touch. While the release of “Scream VI” was well received by fans, other “Scream” stars, such as Jenna Ortega and Courteney Cox, expressed their displeasure over Campbell’s absence.
Meanwhile, Cox shared similar sentiments about the 49-year-old actor not making an appearance in the sixth film. Cox, who reprises her role in the latest installment, played the role of Gale Weathers in the franchise, supporting her co-star’s decision to come out.
He admitted in a friendly chat with Variety that the shoot was different without Campbell. He said, “I miss working with him. But I will support whatever he feels is right.”
The Reason Behind Campbell’s Decision to Leave the ‘Scream’ Franchise
Although the “Skyscraper” actor did not make an appearance in “Scream VI,” he still has a lot of love for “Scream” fans and even discussed why he left the popular franchise.
Campbell revealed during an interview that his absence from the sixth sequel was due to “negotiations.” He stated, “I don’t feel that what I’m being offered is equal to the value that I bring to this franchise, and have brought to this franchise, for 25 years.”
The “Clouds” actor explained that it worries him a lot because a man with years of experience will not be given an unfavorable offer.
In her words, “As a woman in this business, I think it is very important for us to be appreciated and fight to be appreciated. I honestly don’t believe that if I’m a guy and have done five big blockbuster franchise installments over 25 years, that the number I’ve been offered is the number a guy would be offered.”
As much as the Hollywood star wants to be there for fans of the franchise, he can’t allow himself to ignore the low value. She said, “I can’t walk on set feeling that way — feeling unappreciated and feeling the injustice, or the lack of justice, around her.”
Ahead of the release of “Scream 6” in March 2023, Campbell dashed fans’ hopes of seeing him back on screen with a statement that alluded to the fact that he was not paid what he was due in June 2022.
The actress said, “Unfortunately I won’t be doing the next Scream movie. As a woman, I’ve had to work hard in my career to establish my worth, especially when it comes to Scream. I feel the offers I’ve been given don’t match the value I bring to the franchise.”
Speaking to his fans, he admitted, “It was a very difficult decision to move on. To all my Scream fans, I love you. You have always been incredibly supportive of me. I am forever grateful to you and to what this franchise is. has given me over the past 25 years.”
