Sea lion escapes Central Park Zoo enclosure in floodwaters as rain batters NYC

He had a good time!

A sea lion at the Central Park Zoo enjoyed a little freedom Friday when he rode floodwaters and swam out of his pool enclosure as the Big Apple was inundated with heavy rain.

The marine mammal was “exploring the area” during its impromptu swimming excursion – but did not leave the grounds of the facility, officials said.

The executive vice president of the Wildlife Conservation Society, Jim Breheny, said in a statement that the sea lion “was able to swim out of his pool due to flooding in the plaza caused by heavy rain in New York City today”.

“Zoo staff monitored the sea lion as he explored the area before returning to the normal environment of the pool and the group of two other sea lions,” he continued.

“The water level has receded, and the animals are contained in their exhibit.”

Sea lions never cross outside the boundaries of the zoo, which is closed before heavy rain in the morning.

“Animal care staff will continue to monitor the situation throughout the duration of the weather event,” he added.

Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul both declared states of emergency.

“This is a dangerous and life-threatening situation. Do not attempt to travel unless you are fleeing a flooded area or under an evacuation order,” the flash flood warning also warned.

Wild scenes of flooding occurred across the city as the storm moved through the tri-state area, turning local roads into rivers during the morning rush hour.
