Security guard ‘happy to be alive’ after suffering 5 bullet wounds in gunfight at Texas weed dispensary

A Texas security guard says he’s “glad to be alive” after he was reportedly shot five times during a wild fight caught on camera with three armed robbers who broke into the marijuana dispensary where he worked.

Jonah Duran had only been working at his cousin’s place, the Purple Dragon Marijuana Dispensary in San Antonio, for a few months when the robbers broke in around 3 a.m. Saturday, according to CBS 5.

Duran — who was sitting on a couch when the attackers attacked — pulled his gun and shot the suspects, two of whom were armed themselves.

He hit one of the men, who fell to the ground as he jumped from Duran’s bullet, the video shows.

The other gunman fired several rounds before he and the other robbers fled.

But Duran’s success in the gruesome shootout was not without cost, the station said.

The father of three was hit by five bullets – three in the neck, one in the hand and one in the leg, his mother Nancy said. At least one of them came from the wounded gunman, who pulled the trigger one last time when he saw Duran get off the couch.

Authorities took the guard to the hospital, where doctors operated for hours to save his life.

“I’m glad to be alive,” Duran said Monday, in his first comments since the ordeal. “I’m glad I can still be by my children’s side.”

Her mother said Duran’s father died at an early age, and she can’t imagine what would have happened if he hadn’t been there for her own children, including an 8-month-old daughter, CBS said.

“It’s really hard for me right now,” Nancy said. “I’m so thankful they didn’t kill him.”

A GoFundMe has been set up to help Duran. As of Sunday morning, it had raised more than $10,000.

“He will make a full recovery,” store owner Ricardo Lopez told the station. “Prayers to his family now.”

Nancy added that she wants all three robbers to be held accountable — but is still praying that the wounded gunman is okay.

The unidentified suspect is in critical condition — he was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, CBS said.

“I just pray to God people have learned a lesson from this,” said Nancy.

Police have not released any further information about the other two suspects, who are both still at large.

Recreational marijuana is still illegal in Texas – although medical marijuana is allowed.
