A security guard was shot in the back of the head Saturday while trying to break up a fight during the final quarter of a high school football game in Utica.
The shooting erupted shortly after 4 p.m. in the parking lot outside Thomas R. Proctor High School, the city’s police department said.
A group of about a dozen people were fighting on the pavement when at least two shots rang out, video showing the incident.
One of the two security guards who tried to separate the fighting group fell to the ground after being hit by one of the shots.
He was rushed to hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The violent group had been pushed out of the varsity game against nearby Binghamton High School by another member of the school’s law enforcement moments before the shooting, according to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams.

The stadium was equipped with metal detectors, but the guard turned the group away before he could be informed of the gun.
“He suspected there was something wrong with this group and he refused to lead into the stadium,” Williams said.
Police say a lone gunman – who remains at large – is responsible for the violent escalation.
Officials have not yet released a motive for the punch but said it may have been gang-related.
The Utica football shooting comes just a week after a student was killed and an adult woman was injured when gunfire erupted during halftime at a Louisiana high school football game.
An 18-year-old man was arrested for allegedly pulling the trigger, although authorities have not released the incident that led to the deadly crime.
Last month, a 16-year-old suffered a similar fatal fate when he was hit by a bullet that ricocheted off the stands during an Oklahoma football game.
Shocking video shows the moment gunfire erupted, leaving players and spectators scrambling for safety.
