Suffering from cancer, the Indian freedom fighter’s father convinced her to marry the son of a Pakistani army general friend who was also an army officer in Pakistan. So that he works as a spy, and gives secret information of Pakistani army to India.
Before marriage, she got spy training through the Indian intelligence organization ‘RAW.’ After marriage, Sehmat gained the trust of his family and relatives, and gradually, started sending secret information to the Indian Intelligence Bureau. During this time, he also worked as a teacher to teach the grandchildren of General Yahya Khan there.
During the Indo-Pakistani war in 1971, he provided one of the most important pieces of information to India, according to which the Pakistani military was planning to sink ‘INS Vikrant (R11),’ a Majestic class aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy, which was part of the naval strategy for confrontation military between India and Pakistan. But with Sehmat’s support, Indian intelligence gave an early warning of this Pakistani plan to the Indian Navy. Finally, Indian Navy soldiers managed to save INS Vikrant.
Later, Sehmat’s spy role and real purpose is discovered by Pakistani agents. But he managed to escape from the Pakistani army and returned to India. At the moment, she is pregnant with the child of a Pakistani officer’s husband. These children were born in India, and after adulthood, joined the Indian army.

According to writer Harinder S. Sikka, it took him about 8 years to fabricate a story he got from an Indian army officer during Sikka’s visit to Kargil, and there, the officer told him about his Kashmiri Muslim mother who married a Pakistani officials.
Sikka, next went to meet the person’s mother in Malerkotla (Punjab) to know more about her true story. After meeting him, he learned the complete picture of his life and decided to write it down. He did not reveal his identity for his safety and replaced his name with ‘Sehmat Khan.’
In April 2008, Harinder’s debut novel ‘Calling Sehmat’ was published by Konark Publishers, and after ten years in May 2018, it was republished by Penguin Random House, India. According to Sikka, despite being an ex-serviceman himself, he is proud to admit that he learned the true meaning of patriotism from his story.
