Gomez is set to make a guest appearance in the pilot, reprising his role as Alex Russo, a character who was instrumental in launching his career. Meanwhile, Henrie will return as Justin Russo, this time as a series regular.

The former “Barney & Friends” actor delighted his 429 million followers with an update via social media, posting a screenshot of the news page detailing the deal.

Across the image, she exclaimed, “So excited,” along with a red heart emoji. Gomez followed the upload with a second, choosing to share a photo of her and her on-screen brother sitting on a sofa this time.

In the photo, Henrie sees the singer-songwriter, who appears to be in the middle of a seemingly animated conversation. “We’re back,” he wrote a little above the Instagram Story photo.

Spilling the tea on the project, Deadline reports that writer and executive producer Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas, known for their work on another Disney Channel comedy spin-off, “Raven’s Home,” are creating a revival plot. The storyline comes after a mysterious incident at WizTech, where the grown-up Justin chooses a non-magical life with his wife and two sons, abandoning his wizarding powers.

However, he faces a surprise when a powerful young wizard seeking training arrives at his door, forcing Justin to make peace with his magical past in order to secure the future of the Wizarding World. Joining the cast of the sequel is newcomer Janice LeAnn Brown [known for Disney’s “Just Roll with It”]Alkaio Thiele [from “Call Me Kat”]and Mimi Gianopulos [recognized for her role in “American Princess”].

The role of the powerful young witch Billie, taken under Justin’s wing, will be portrayed by series leader Brown. Thiele will play Roman Russo, Justin’s eldest son, while Gianopulos will play Justin’s wife, Giada.

Henrie previously spoke about the bond the original “Wizards of Waverly Place” cast shares, claiming, “We’re all in touch. Every year or a few times a year, we all text or say hello to each other.”

He later emphasized that he and Gomez remain “the closest to each other,” adding that they “definitely [still] talk a lot.” Speaking exclusively to The Blast, the 34-year-old said, “She’s Auntie Selena to my kids, so she and I are the closest, we’ve kept that sisterly relationship.”

The camaraderie between them made it easy for Henrie to admit that appearing on the reboot of the Disney series “would be a lot of fun.” He further reflected:

“We’re a family on and off camera so it’s almost too much fun and I think people feel that chemistry when they watch the show too, so I really want to do a reboot. I think it’s just about ideas and when and how and all of that.”

Sitcom Creator Wants Alex To Have A Gay Relationship With This On-Screen Friend

Murrieta stated that, if the series were released in the present day and the Disney Channel allowed it, she would like to see their relationship depicted as a gay romance.

In his words, “I wish we could have played more with what was obvious to most of us. We couldn’t do it at the time, but it was pretty clear to all of us what the relationship was.”

He revealed that the show could not depict a gay relationship between Alex and Stevie because of Disney’s conservative stance at the time. Murrieta acknowledged that Disney Channel has included LGBTQ characters since then, and even though they were as close as possible at the time, she said it would be nice to fully explore the gay relationship between them.
