Two members of Congress in Israel described the danger and confusion surrounding the attack by Hamas – the deadliest the country has seen in 50 years.
US Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) arrived in Jerusalem on Friday ahead of the N7 summit in Tel Aviv, an economic forum where the senator is scheduled to speak.
Booker’s spokesman said the senator and his staff were “sheltering in place for their safety,” and expressed gratitude that they were able to leave Israel without incident on Sunday.
In a post on social media website X, the senator said he was jogging in Jerusalem’s Old City when he received an “urgent call” from his chief of staff informing him that Israel was under attack.
Booker said he took cover in a “bomb shelter,” which was the stairwell of his hotel, and saw the “frightened faces” of the Israelis and Americans hiding with him.
Booker said he and his team were “shocked, angry, and heartbroken” by the Hamas terror attack that has left more than 700 Israelis dead, thousands injured, and 100 hostages.
