Sen. Fetterman ‘can’t understand’ pro-Palestinian protestor: ‘The joke is on you. I had a stroke’

Sen. John Fetterman avoided responding to angry protesters this week, saying his past hits made it impossible to understand what was being chanted.

A pro-Palestinian activist yelled at Fetterman as the Pennsylvania Democrat spoke at a Get Out the Vote rally on Sunday in McKeesport, Pennsylvania.

“Four thousand more children died in Palestine! Nine thousand more civilians died! Get off the stage,” the unidentified protester jeered.

The insulter continued, “You have blood on your hands! Get off the stage!”

Fetterman, who did not immediately respond to the man’s screams, said he could not understand what was being said because of his previous stroke.

“The joke is on you. I had a stroke,” Fetterman told the protesters. “I can’t quite understand what you’re saying.”

The Pennsylvania lawmaker has been heavily criticized by left-wing Democratic groups for failing to call for a ceasefire in Gaza.

The interaction in McKeesport was one of several instances when Fetterman has appealed to his disability as a hindrance — the senator has typically dismissed concerns that his linguistic struggles could affect his ability to carry out his elected office.

The Pennsylvania senator’s office has repeatedly slammed critics for drawing attention to his apparent speech impediment and has maintained that he is more than capable of the job.

Fetterman’s office was previously found to have edited some of his statements in a press release earlier this year to make them more coherent.

Fetterman no longer relies on a digital transcription tool to speak to reporters and others as he continues to recover from a stroke he suffered last year, the Washington Post reported last week. He was hospitalized for depression earlier this year as well.

Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., is the only member of the US Senate to call for a ceasefire so far. About 24 members of the House have demanded such a ceasefire as well.
