Sen. Kevin Cramer’s son charged with manslaughter in car chase that killed sheriff’s deputy

Senator Kevin Cramer’s grown son was charged with murder Thursday after he allegedly sparked a car chase that ended in the death of a sheriff’s deputy in his home state of North Dakota.

Ian Matthew Cramer, 42, is also charged with reckless endangerment, driving under suspension, fleeing a peace officer, and resisting arrest, according to court records.

Authorities responded to a report of a stolen SUV late Wednesday and located Ian Cramer and the vehicle, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.

As deputies approached, Ian Cramer allegedly sped off, prompting a pursuit.

At one point, Cramer veered out of his lane and collided with Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Martin’s parked vehicle, according to officials.

Martin, 53, who was installing a tire deflator, was killed by his own patrol car in the chain reaction of the crash, officials said.

Kevin Cramer (R-ND) said in a statement Wednesday afternoon that his son “suffers from a serious mental disorder that manifests in severe paranoia and hallucinations.”

“We grieve especially for the family of heroes who tried to help Ian, and we pray that our gracious God will show up as He always does in tragedy,” Cramer added. “We ask the public to pray for the families and co-workers of the missing officers who serve every day and thank them for all they do for us.

“We also pray to God for healing for Ian. We love him and are deeply hurt.”

Ian Cramer is scheduled to make an initial appearance Friday in Mercer County Court.

In 2013, the younger Cramer was hit with a misdemeanor simple assault charge after allegedly headbutting his younger brother. He pleaded guilty and was given a 10-day suspended jail sentence, one year of probation, and ordered to pay a $150 fine.

Earlier that year, Cramer pleaded guilty to making false reports to law enforcement and possession of a controlled substance. He was given credit for time served and ordered to pay a $300 fine.

Martin is an 18-year veteran of the Mercer County Sheriff’s office and is married with three children, per authorities.
