Sen. Sherrod Brown gives royalties to far-left group whose director wants to abolish ICE, defund police

Senator Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) has given book royalties for nearly two decades to groups whose “far-left” directors have pushed for the repeal of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and defunding of the police department.

Brown, 70, has contributed royalties from his 2004 book “The Myth of Free Trade” to Cleveland Jobs with Justice (CLEJWJ), according to his Senate financial disclosure.

Cleveland Jobs with Justice is part of a national pro-union coalition that has partnered with the Socialist Democrats of America, among other organizations.

CLEJWJ director Deb Kline, a “far-left progressive activist” has posted on social media in favor of repealing ICE. For three years after the summer 2020 riots in US cities, Kline has been part of a Facebook group with a stated commitment to “liberate the police.”

“I: proud of the union; enthusiastic and fully supportive of immigrant rights; and a registered democrat [sic] that leaned far to the left, I almost fell,” Kline said on Facebook in 2020.

The year after Brown’s 2006 election to the Senate, lawmakers hired John Ryan, a founding member and former director of Cleveland Jobs with Justice as state director, a position Ryan has held ever since.

Kline replaced Ryan as group leader.

In 2013, Kline was arrested for joining 100 women and undocumented immigrants in building a human barrier between the House office building and the US Capitol to call for immigration reform, according to the group’s website.

Jobs with Justice recently promoted a “Technology-Free Campaign for Apartheid” by Amazon and Google employees, who say the Israeli government is to blame for the October 7 terrorist attacks carried out by Hamas.

“We refuse to create the technological tools for the Israeli army and government to continue to surveil, isolate and kill the Palestinian people – tools that have set in motion the brutal system of racial domination and military occupation that has brought us to this moment of violence,” their statement reads.

“As workers, we refuse to be involved in ethnic cleansing.”

Two of those candidates — Ohio State Sen. Matt Dolan and Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose — have both trailed Brown in this year’s election, according to the FiveThirtyEight average, but the Democratic senator has a double-digit lead in most recent polls.

Entrepreneur Bernie Moreno also aims to unseat Brown in 2024 but has yet to defeat him in an Ohio Senate poll.

Representatives for Brown’s campaign and Senate office did not respond to requests for comment.
