Sen. Tom Cotton proposes ‘massive retaliation’ against Iran after spate of attacks on US assets

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) proposed “massive retaliation” against Iran and implored President Biden to act tough in response to attacks on US assets in the region.

Cotton criticized the president for taking a restrained response against Iran, which has not attacked the US directly, but has acted through its proxies since the war broke out in Israel.

“We only responded a few times. When we do respond, it’s almost always in empty proxy warehouses or maybe proxy forces in Iraq and Syria,” Cotton told “Fox News Sunday.”

“It seems the president wants to go out of his way to avoid the death of Iran,” he added. “I will target Iranians operating in Iraq and in Syria. I will also send a clear message to Iran if these attacks do not stop immediately, then we will start threatening their assets.”

There have been at least 66 attacks on US troops since October 17, according to the Department of Defense.

Cotton, 46, a military veteran who sits on the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee, has long been a peddler in Iran.

He noted that Biden’s leniency toward Tehran stemmed from “fear of escalation,” but countered that “increased dominance” would deter aggression.

When asked about the risk of a kinetic reaction triggering a response “similar to World War III,” Cotton downplayed the possibility.

“What Reagan did when he sank half of Iran’s navy, it did not lead to an open and blatant war,” he said. “After Donald Trump instructed [the] the assassination of Qasem Soleimani in Iraq, Iran’s terrorist mastermind, Iran is pulling its horns for the rest of the Trump era.”

“The way to stop this attack is not fear and hesitation and caution in response, but massive retaliation to make it clear that we will not tolerate this attack on the American people.”

Iran, a Shiite-majority country, has strongly opposed Israel’s war against Hamas, the Tehran-backed Sunni Islamist terrorist group.

The Biden administration has drawn attention from Republicans, particularly over the suspension of his Iran envoy, Robert Malley, who is subject to an investigation, the details of which are unclear.

Rep. Jake Auchincloss, (D-Mass.) who appeared on the program after Cotton, defended the president’s policy against the regime in Tehran.

“They have launched almost 50 new sets of sanctions which have helped lead to almost 50% inflation in the Iranian economy. Iran is desperate now,” Auchincloss said.
