Serena Williams Calls Roger Federer Her Inspiration In Touching Retirement Tribute

Serena Williams has opened her “retirement club” to compatriot tennis champion Roger Federer!

The sweet tribute comes shortly after the Swiss star announced her retirement from professional tennis at the age of 41. As Williams closed the curtain on her own tennis career earlier this month, she knows better than anyone what Federer is going through. So it’s no surprise that she took to Instagram to welcome him to the “retirement club.”

In the post, Williams attached three images of herself and Federer at different tennis events. While the first showed the 41-year-old holding a selfie stick to capture him and the mother-of-one on the tennis court, the next slide featured the power duo using scissors to cut the ribbon.

Another swipe to the left shows Williams and Federer hugging each other as the crowd cheers from the stands. The 23-time Grand Slam winner began his caption by stating that he “wanted to find the perfect way to say this,” because he “so eloquently put this game – done perfectly, just like your career.”

After expressing his admiration for him, the 73-time title winner said his and Federer’s paths had “always been the same” and that he had inspired “millions of people” including him. The 40-year-old continues to praise Federer while looking forward to all he has to do in the future.

The world’s highest-paid female athlete of 2016 finally welcomed her tennis counterpart to the “retirement club” and thanked her for staying true to herself. In addition to the nearly 500k likes it garnered, the post saw an outpouring of comments.

Among the thousands of congratulations from fans was one from an Instagram user who said, “What I admire most is that you all could be there to win, but you give newcomers a chance to rise by your example!!”

Federer’s decision to retire from tennis follows a tumultuous three-year period for the 20-time Grand Slam champion, who has suffered three knee injuries, desperately trying to return to his former glory. The world number one for 237 consecutive weeks from February 2004 to August 2008, announced his retirement in a letter posted on social media, according to Sky Sports.

He began the note by acknowledging his “tennis family and beyond” and the people he met “along the way: my friends, my competitors, and most of the fans who give the sport its life.” She later mentioned the challenges she has faced and admitted to knowing her “body’s capabilities and limitations,” and stated, “her message to me lately has been clear.” He continued:

“I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 games in 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I could have dreamed, and now I must realize when it is time to end my competitive career.”

It should be noted that Federer’s last appearance took place at Wimbledon 2021, where he reached the quarterfinals. The last time he won a Grand Slam was at the 2018 Australian Open, becoming the second-oldest man to win a major singles title in the Open era at the age of 36.

Serena Williams Impressed With Tom Brady’s Re-Entry

Earlier this month, The Blast stated that Williams might change her mind and return to her first love – tennis. The revelation was made when the tennis legend appeared on an episode of “The Tonight Show” Jimmy Fallon, where the couple decided to quit tennis.

Fallon had asked the Michigan native if, “There’s no way you could pull a Tom Brady and say, ‘Maybe I’m growing to come back.'” He jokingly replied, “You know? Tom Brady started an amazing trend. That’s what I want to talk.”

Once he finished laughing at his joke, Williams explained that his future was unclear because he was at a point where he had “a lot more to give” and do. Therefore, she will not rest because her retirement feels “more like an evolution of Serena.”
