Shankar Jiwal is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of 1990 batch of Tamil Nadu cadre. He has held several positions in the Tamil Nadu Police and became the Director General of the Tamil Nadu Police on 1 July 2023.

Shankar Jiwal was born on Saturday, 14 August 1965 (age 57 years; in 2022) in Almora, Uttarakhand, India. His zodiac sign is Leo. He completed his bachelor’s degree in engineering in mechanical engineering at Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) (now – Delhi University of Technology) in 1987. He then pursued his Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at LIBA (Loyola Institute of Business Administration). in Chennai and a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering (MSIE) degree at Anna University in Chennai. He later pursued a career in the Indian Police Service.

Career
He passed the UPSC examination in 1990 and was allotted Tamil Nadu cadre of Indian Police Service (IPS) on 15 September 1991. He was appointed as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mannargudi in 1993, Superintendent of Police (SP) Salem District in 1995, and Aide-De-Camp (ADC) to the then governor of Tamil Nadu in 1996. He became SP of Madurai district in 1999, SP and Zonal Director of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Chennai, in 2000, Deputy Inspector General of Police ( DIG) and Commissioner of Police (CoP) Trichy City in 2004.

He was appointed DIG of Intelligence-II, Chennai, in 2008, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Intelligence, Chennai, in 2011, and IGP of Special Task Force (STF), Erode, in 2011. He became the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP ) STF, Erode, in 2015 and DGP and CoP of Greater Chennai Police in 2021. He assumed the post of DGP, Tamil Nadu, on 1 July 2023. He has held other important posts, including IGP Internal Security, and established the Organized Crime Intelligence Unit in Tamil Nadu. He is credited for procuring sophisticated modern surveillance tools for the Tamil Nadu police.
