Shanna Moakler’s ex-husband, Oscar De La Hoya, has opened up about another man raising his daughter.
Although it seems like a lifetime ago, Oscar and the former beauty queen dated back in 1997 before announcing their engagement a year later. Almost seven months later, the former couple welcomed their daughter, Atiana De La Hoya, in March 1999.
Their love eventually soured, and they had a dramatic split after the former professional boxer took another woman as his date to an awards ceremony while still committed to Moakler.
After their breakup, Moakler got involved and married rocker Travis Barker, who had no problem raising Atiana. Years later, Oscar has revealed why he let the Blink-182 drummer replace him as Atiana’s dad.
Oscar De La Hoya ‘Runs Away’ From Being A Present Father To Atiana De La Hoya
Despite having a successful career in combat sports, Oscar has lived a relatively quiet life away from the limelight. However, she took a break from being humble to honor an invitation to Allison Kugel’s “Allison Interviews” podcast on Thursday, July 20.
During their conversation, the 50-year-old man revealed the reason for letting his ex-fiancé and ex-husband raise his now 24-year-old baby girl. He stated:
“I basically ran away. I was scared. I was scared. I tried to be a full-time father for a few years, and it was beautiful.”
The boxing promoter reiterated that while it was “amazing to raise a little girl,” it got to a point where she began to question her qualifications. In his words:
“You try to convince yourself that you don’t deserve this; that love cannot happen in your life, because of what I went through, not receiving that love when I was a child. My father never told me, ‘I love you.’”
Oscar later shared that his mother never expressed affection for him, adding, “She never really hugged me. When I cried, he would start hitting me. That’s how bad it is.”
Later in the chat, the father of six admits he’s “always there, but not there,” which makes his relationship with Atiana different than usual. Boxing Golden Child concludes:
“You have to check in and you’re worried. Even though I’m far away, I feel like I’m always close, but I don’t think I’m qualified enough to do the job.”
As for his separation from the mother of his first child, Nicki Swift reports that Moakler has dealt with her emotions over seeing her man at the time with another woman. As he put it in 2001:
I was sitting in bed, watching the Latin Grammy awards, feeling hurt that he left without me. Later, I saw her there with another woman. I’m devastated. I didn’t know there was a real problem in the relationship until then.”

In retaliation, the former Miss USA hit her with a $62.5 million palimony lawsuit a month after the retired boxer sued her for allegedly locking her out of her multimillion-dollar home to throw a party she branded “Shanna’s Freedom Party.”
“Seeing Others” Actor Praises His Daughter For Her Timeless Beauty
Moakler’s love for his children is always well known, with him occasionally posting updates about them. She did so again last month, uploading an image that emphasized the beautiful genes her late mother had passed on to Atiana.
The Blast notes that the Los Angeles-born beauty stunned in a mini skirt and black blazer with nothing underneath. She completed the bold look with red braids and a pout with plum lips. Captioning it, her mother wrote:
“My beautiful daughter @atianadelahoya she looks so much like my mother to me. Your soul is so good. Love you. ❤️?? ⚓️.”
Atiana immediately acknowledged the sweet message, writing in the comment section, “Love you ?♥️.” The budding model was also praised by fans, with one describing her as “absolutely beautiful” and “stunning.”
A second netizen commented, “She’s beautiful; all your kids are beautiful,” a third agreed with Moakler’s caption, typing, “She looks like your mom; she is naturally beautiful ? RIP ?? .” “She is a beautiful, elegant and classy young lady!!” the fourth added, while the fifth repeated, “She looks a lot like your Portuguese mama!”
