Sharmistha Mukherjee is an Indian Kathak dancer and choreographer turned politician. She is the daughter of Pranab Mukherjee and a member of the Indian National Congress.

Sharmistha Mukherjee was born on Saturday, 30 October 1965 (age 54 years; as in 2019) in West Bengal. His zodiac sign is Scorpio. She did her schooling from Lady Irwin School in Delhi. He completed his studies from St Stephen’s College in Delhi and post-graduation in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Sharmistha grew up in Delhi. After seeing Pandit Durgalal perform at an event, he decided to learn Kathak from him. At the age of 12, he started training under Durgalal and later trained under Vidushi Uma Sharma and Rajendra Gangani.

He has two brothers – Abhijit Mukherjee, a politician and former Member of Parliament from Jangipur Parliamentary Constituency and Indrajit Mukherjee.

Sharmishta has performed in over 40 countries. Over the years, she developed her own Kathak dance style and even performed at the Brandenburg Concerto, by Johann Sebastian Bach.
Politics
Sharmistha joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in July 2014.
He has been an active participant in party gatherings and has worked with party workers at the grassroots level. He contested the 2015 Delhi Assembly Elections from the Greater Kailash Constituency, securing 6102 votes and losing to Saurabh Bharadwaj (AAP; 57,589 votes) and Rakesh Gullaiya (BJP; 43,006 votes). Sharmistha was posted as Delhi Congress Communications Chief, but she resigned, on 14 February 2019. She was appointed Delhi Mahila Congress Chief by Rahul Gandhi in 2019. Sharmistha, along with Anshul Kumar, was appointed National Spokesperson for Congress in June 2019.
Controversy
- In 2016, a man named Partha Mandal continuously sent her offensive messages on his Facebook Messenger. She used her Facebook account to expose the online harasser. Her post went viral, and she was praised for taking a strong stand against online bullies. The note read-
This perverted Partha Mandal sent me dirty sexual messages. My first reaction was to ignore & block it. But then I thought the silence drove him to find another victim. Blocking & reporting alone is not enough. I really feel that ppl shd be exposed & insulted openly. I posted a screenshot of his profile & the message he sent me. I also tagged him. Please share this post & tag this rat as a message that this misguided act will not be taken lightly.
- In 2017, the Indian National Congress posted a picture of Rajiv Gandhi and Pranab Mukherjee, with the caption, “Shri Rajiv Gandhi and Pranab Mukherjee, in 1985.” It offended Sharmistha, and she lashed out at the Congress, for not addressing her father as ‘Shri,’ when he was the President of the country. Soon after his tweet went viral, INC deleted their tweet.
- In 2018, after Pranab Mukherjee attended an RSS event on June 7 in Nagpur, rumors of him joining the Bharatiya Janata Party started doing rounds on the internet. Upset with the rumours, he took to his Twitter account and wrote,
In the mountains enjoying a beautiful sunset, and suddenly this news that I was supposed to join the BJP hit like a torpedo! Can’t there be peace and sanity in this world? I joined politics because I believe in Congress. Would rather leave politics than leave Congress.
- In December 2019, Sharmistha, along with several other members of the Delhi Mahila Congress, were arrested near Amit Shah’s residence and taken to the Mandir Marg Police Station, when she was protesting the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019.

- Datuk Sharmistha, Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee was a freedom fighter and a member of the West Bengal Legislative Council from 1952 to 1964. He was also a member of the All India Congress Committee (AICC).
- Sharmistha has previously expressed that she is not interested in politics and is more focused on her dancing career. However, he joined INC in 2015.
- Due to her mother’s deteriorating health, Sharmistha had to take over the role of Rashtrapati Bhavan’s temporary hostess and accompany her father in many official meetings.
- Sharmistha has been vocal about women’s issues in India and has openly expressed her views on social media platforms. He is often seen making bold statements in public, even if it means going against his father’s views. In an interview, he said,
That’s how I grew up, & that’s why I don’t have any problem expressing my differences with him on issues even in public. We are a democratic and argumentative family; & I learned this from my father only.
- According to Sharmistha, she is the only one in her family, who can argue with her father. His father had affectionately called him ‘Monkey’ in his childhood.
- When he was studying in class 12, he started performing with his mentor’s group and barely studied. His mother was busy telling him to study, but he didn’t care to study. A few months before his exam, his father told him that everything was fine; if he doesn’t want to study, but he shouldn’t expect help from him to get a good college later. It stoked his ego, and he began to study hard.
- In 2013, Sharmistha walked the ramp for the first time at a charity event organized by the Earth Foundation, hosted by the Turkish Embassy in Delhi.
