At 1:30 PM ET, the Royal Family released a brief statement that read, “The Queen passed away peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen will be staying at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Many celebrities have taken to social media to pay their respects to the late Queen, including many who had a personal encounter with the 96-year-old legend.

In a candid Instagram post, the 64-year-old actress recalled meeting Queen Elizabeth II and how she was in person.

“I had the extraordinary experience of being invited by Her Majesty the Queen of England to join in her box for a polo match and meet Her Majesty,” he wrote. “Magnificent, stunning, elegant, but beneath it I could sense a delicious whisper of humor. He judged me with his great power and sent me away.”

American model Sofia Richie, youngest daughter of singer Lionel Richie and sister of TV personality Nicole Richie, also took to Instagram to pay tribute with two pictures of the Queen.
