Shashi Deshpande is an Indian novelist.

Shashi Deshpande is a popular writer in India. He was born on 19 August 1938 in Dharwad district of Karnataka. Shashi has been a recipient of the much coveted Padma Shri award. He is also a member of the Sahitya Academy. He was born to famous parents. He published his short stories in 1978 and his first novel in 1980 ‘The Dark Holds No Terror’. He was educated in Mumbai and Banglore. He did his education in law and economics. He pursued his studies in journalism at Vidya Bhawan and worked as a journalist for a short period with the popular magazine ‘Onlooker’. Get a degree in art in addition.
Family
Shashi belongs to an upper middle class family and is married to the same. He remembers the intellectual environment, at home, created by his father, the great novelist, dramatist, director; Sriranga. His father affectionately calls him ‘nirupayogi’ and his younger brother ‘Jaane’.
Parents & Siblings
Shashi was born to famous dramatists and writers, Adya Rangacharya and Sharada Adya. His father was known by the pen name Sriranga. He has two siblings a brother and a sister; Usha Desai. His relationship with his mother was not perfect, he mentions in his book Listen to Me. He also talked about how his brother’s health problems affected the family.

She is married to Dr. Dhirender H. Deshpande and has 2 sons. She described her husband as the most supportive and nurturing like her own father. She lost her son Raghu at a young age in 2017. Their other son Vikram lives in the US. Speaking about the disclosure of his personal life issues, he mentioned the wound of losing his son, which is actually still fresh and causes great pain and sadness.
Career
Award-winning writer Shashi Deshpande started her writing career at the age of 30. After getting married and having two children, he started writing professionally. Previously, she said she could not be a homemaker alone, a frustration she experienced channeled in her writing. Many of her writings are considered women’s writings or feminist writings. He always had a strong opinion about his writing and even his writing was seen. He said, he likes the most understandable language, to use in his work. The exaggeration of the language did not seem to appeal to him. Nor are many writers who get away with such things, making an exception for Arundhati Roy. Her book, The Dark Holds no Terrors was made into a film, in 1997, by the first female director, Prema Karanth. In 2017 HarperCollins optioned the film rights to Strangers to Ourselves, directed by Hasal Mehta. He faces quite a bit of bias being an English writer because people often have the initial impression that he is rich. Another thing he disliked the most was the categorization of his work as being only for women, he said the fact men came to him to get books signed specifically for the women in their lives, seemed a bit odd to him. He also felt that his first book was published by a foreign publisher had a big role in the performance of the book, often the publisher from abroad was a factor affecting the performance of the book. Her first reader is always her husband and the most annoying critics are those who bring in personal and put malice in the comments, based on that.
Controversy
- Deshpande was in the news when he resigned from the highly respected Sahitya Akademi, over the killing of Prof. MM Kalburgi, whom he described as an honest man and a scholar, who is also a member of the general council of the Sahitya Academy. He wrote his resignation, following little that the Academy did. He was seen expressing his frustration at not being able to take a stand simultaneously, as the professor, calling him one of them. He has expressed frustration with the government and disagreed when asked if he wanted the Sahitya Akademi to become an activist body. Deshpande went on to say that his only concern is that the writer be guaranteed freedom of expression since Mr. Kalburgi bears the brunt of this. He did not mince words and stated that the government came to power with the help of Hindutva forces and speaking against them will not benefit them and hence the silence.
Unfortunately, it has become increasingly important to insist that dissent cannot be ended by a bullet; that discussion and debate is the only way a civilized society resolves issues. It has also become clear that the writer, who is supposed to be the guardian of the public conscience, is no longer considered an intellectual leader; their voices don’t matter anymore.” Noting that maybe it’s “the right time for writers to reclaim their voice.”
- He expressed his opinion during the Citizenship Amendment bill and how the government faced opposition with violence.
