Shelly Oberoi is an Indian politician, academician, and teacher. She made headlines after she won the Delhi MCD elections from ward number 86 in East Patel Nagar in Delhi on 7 December 2022 following which the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) announced her name as its mayoral candidate, and she became Delhi’s Mayor on 22 February 2023.

Shelly Oberoi was born in 1983 (age 40 years; as of 2023) in Delhi, India. After completing her schooling at the Faith Academy in New Delhi, she enrolled at the Janki Devi Memorial College in Delhi and earned a bachelor’s degree in commerce. Shelly received Miss Kamla Rani Prize and a scholarship for obtaining the highest marks while pursuing B.Com. Later, she earned a master’s degree in commerce at Himachal Pradesh University. She earned a master’s degree in philosophy at Annamalai University in Tamil Nadu. In May 2017, she enrolled at the School of Management Studies (SOMS) at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) to pursue her PhD. Shelly Oberoi also completed her Post Graduate Diploma in Business Analytics (PGDBA) at the Symbiosis International University in Pune, Maharashtra. From 2021 to 2022, she pursued a business management certification program at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Kozhikode. Shelly passed her University Grants Commission (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET) exam.

Politics
Shelly Oberoi’s political journey began in 2013 when she joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). After joining the party, she worked as an activist and participated in several campaigns organised by the party. In 2020, she was appointed as the Aam Aadmi Party’s state vice president of the women’s wing. In December 2022, she contested the municipal elections from ward number 86 in East Patel Nagar in Delhi on Aam Aadmi Party’s ticket. In the elections, she defeated her BJP rival by a margin of 269 votes. Later, the AAP nominated her as their mayoral candidate. In an interview, she said that if she gets elected to the post of mayor of Delhi, her priority would be sanitation and cleanliness of Delhi. She further said,
Over the next few months, we will all work together to make Delhi the city that it should have been. The BJP, during its 15-year tenure, have turned Delhi into the ‘garbage capital of the country’. We will work together to ensure that Delhi becomes clean again and to fulfil the promises made by the CM and deliver the 10 guarantees. Our aim is to make Delhi better together with everyone. We will soon work by preparing a blueprint for cleaning the capital; we will start by clearing the mountains of garbage compiled in the city. All 250 councillors will come together to clean and transform Delhi… and they have already started working in their respective wards.”
On 22 February 2023, in the fourth attempt at the Mayoral poll, she was elected the Mayor of Delhi by securing 150 votes; BJP’s Rekha Gupta secured 116 votes. On 26 April 2023, she retained the post of Delhi’s Mayor after the BJP’s withdrawal from the Delhi Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections.
Teaching and Academician
Shelly Oberoi began working as an assistant professor at Delhi University in September 2014. In January 2021, she began working as an assistant professor (visiting faculty) at the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) in Mumbai. Throughout her teaching career, she has authored more than 35 research papers and journals such as Emotional intelligence: An extensive literature review, Impact of blockchain technology and 5G/IoT on supply chain management and trade finance, and Cyber security in India: threats and challenges. Her research papers have been discussed on both national and international platforms. Shelly Oberoi has also been invited to give lectures on Doordarshan’s Gyan Darshan and Gyan Vani.
She has also served as a member of the Academic Reviewer Board of Cybernomics. Shelly Oberoi has also taught in universities like Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and Indira Gandhi National Open University (INGNOU) in New Delhi.
