Although he lives a life free from the worries of “Abbott Elementary,” Ralph has made it clear that his life has not been a bed of roses. In an exclusive conversation with AARP Magazine’s August/September cover story, the 66-year-old actress revealed:

“When Etienne was in college, he had a car accident and suffered a concussion. It changed his whole brain. Then he was robbed, and they shot him three times. He woke up in hospital with two bullets in his leg and a gash on his forehead where the bullet had grazed him.”

News that the now 31-year-old had been shot, the “Christmas in My Heart” star “collapsed and dropped the phone.” In the words of the 66-year-old:

“I didn’t hear anything else. But they didn’t kill him, thank God. Now she runs her own production and non-profit company, WalkGoodLA, which focuses on healing, mental health and overall well-being.”

Just before he told the story, Ralph had talked about his children, saying, “Children are my greatest gift. I knew I was going to be someone’s mother. When I met their father, my first husband, I could see the children- my children clearly as they are in life now, and I said, ‘Oh, I know the assignment here.”

After reflecting on her first union, the “It’s a Living” actress admitted that if she had any regrets, it would be not having any more children. Even so, he felt very lucky to have these two beautiful children as his own. When asked about how her daughter became a stylist, the “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit” actress detailed:

“He majored in economics at Syracuse, and I thought he was going to go to Wall Street — he definitely had the skills. But he always loved fashion. My mom was a fashion designer, and Coco was very influenced by her.”

Despite that history, when the 28-year-old expressed her ambition to become a social media influencer after graduation, Ralph had his doubts, feeling that she might have wasted money on her tuition. However, almost a decade later, Coco’s career path has proven successful, beyond expectations, with this year being a remarkable turning point for her and her mother.

In addition to growing closer to her daughter, the Primetime Emmy Award nominee took to heart the words shared by her late father, Stanley, before he passed away. He recalled:

“My father once told me, “You’re going to live a long time, so you need to take care of yourself. Eat right. Exercise.” My life is about preparing for longevity. Finding my joy, making great choices for me, understanding that life isn’t always fair. Sometimes it’s your day. Sometimes it’s not your day. But if it’s good day or bad day, you have to thank God that you have a day.

Earlier this year, The Blast reported that Ralph gracefully shut down critics after they accused him of lip-syncing during his Super Bowl performance. In case you missed it, the mother of two gave a powerful rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” at the star-studded annual event held at the State Farm Arena in Glendale, Arizona, in February.

Following social media chatter about her not singing the song organically, the Screen Actors Guild Award winner simply asked, “Does it matter? Is it important? Nope. Thank you.”

As it turned out, he was more focused on being selected to perform at such a caliber of event and expressed his excitement that the Eagles were participating in the Super Bowl. About that, he said:

“It’s amazing that they chose me. And then the Eagles were in the Super Bowl. I mean, come on. You know God must be a woman because all this is too perfect.”

The last time Ralph had such a privilege was more than 100 years ago when he was chosen to sing the Black National Anthem for the first time in public on February 12, 1900, during Black History Month.
