Ralph was also honored to perform the Black National Anthem on the same date it was first performed publicly 123 years ago, February 12, 1900, during Black History Month. He stated that he was very excited to make history at the Super Bowl and will always cherish the experience.

The star showed another reason why it was such an important moment saying, “Abbott Elementary takes place in Philadelphia. My husband is a senator in Philadelphia. And this year, the Eagles [went] to the Super Bowl — I’ve already been chosen to sing.”

After her performance, the camera panned to Abbott Elementary co-stars Quinta Brunson and Lisa Ann Walter, who eagerly supported her. Ralph revealed that Brunson had approached him to join the show, recognizing his talent that others had overlooked.

Ralph continued to express his gratitude, “All I can do is thank God—that God would give me all these flowers at this time in my career.” He added:

“I’ve been saying all awards season, ‘It’s about the nominations,’ and for me, this is the nomination.”

The 66-year-old entertainer expressed his confidence in his abilities and that he would not have been chosen to perform alongside great singers, artists and entertainers if he could not deliver.

His co-stars from the ABC mockumentary, “Abbott Elementary,” have been supportive of him since the announcement. The show, set in Philadelphia, is an ongoing cheerleader for the Philly Eagles, who will play the Kansas City Chiefs in a big game on February 12.

Regarding its importance, Ralph stated, “Philly is at a high level with ‘Abbott Elementary’ centered in [the city]. They see this as an exciting last chapter for a new book to be written, or maybe it’s the first chapter as we enter the third season of ‘Abbott Elementary.’
