Popular actor Shia LaBeouf has posted details about his return to religion.

The actor previously starred in the “Transformer” franchise and is credited with roles in “Charlie Countryman,” Fury,” American Honey,” “Borg vs. McEnroe,” “Honey Boy,” “The Peanut Butter Falcon,” and “Pieces of a Woman .”

Before starring in “Padre Pio,” LaBeouf faced abuse allegations from his ex-girlfriend FKA Twigs and was going through a difficult time in his life. The actor said in a recent interview that he nearly killed himself at the time but eventually found God while researching his character in “Padre Pio” and living in a monastery.

Speaking on Bishop Robert Barron’s YouTube series, “Word on Fire,” LaBeouf, who has had controversial religious views in the past, shared that he retraced his steps back to the gospel after going through a very challenging time in his life.

He revealed that the change occurred while he was researching his role in Abel Ferrara’s “Padre Pio,” in which he played Saint Padre Pio, an Italian monk who gained rock star status among Catholics.

While doing her research, the “Transformer” star was battling some inner demons, which made her feel “like her life was on fire” and sapped her strength to continue acting. He also revealed he had considered suicide to escape the chaos in his life.

As he digs deeper into research while living with a Franciscan Capuchin convent, a “switch” occurs in his head, transforming his initial notion of preparing for his role into an encounter with a higher being.

LeBeouf said he realizes there is still hope for him despite how he’s had some people in the past because of his actions, seemingly referring to allegations of abuse against him in recent years. The actor was also charged with two misdemeanors last year – petty theft and battery – for an argument with a stranger.

The “Indiana Jones” star described that he finally found solace through his prayer and studies at the monastery. Looking back on his spiritual journey, LeBeouf also joked that he felt “tricked” into his spiritual path but now realizes that God used his ego to lure him.

During his stay at the monastery, LeBeouf became closer to God and gained a deeper understanding of the life of Padre Pio and the reasons why Catholics admire and respect him. The more he learns, the more the character becomes personal to him.

The actor also revealed that he turned down Ferrara’s request that he play Padre Pio with an Italian accent because “it would take time.” [him] of these things that feel very personal.” Also, he revealed that Pio is a Neapolitan speaker, so his accent doesn’t match Italian.

Born in 1887, Padre Pio received critical acclaim for showing the stigmata or crucifixion wounds similar to those of Jesus Christ. Before starring in “Padre Pio,” LeBeouf was accused by his ex-girlfriend, FKA Twigs, of “relentless abuse” during their nine-month relationship. The singer and songwriter filed a lawsuit in court in which she claimed that the actress wanted to control all parts of their relationship, including setting a daily quota of affection for her to meet.

“I felt so controlled, and I felt so confused, and I felt so low, beneath myself, that the fear of leaving and knowing that I had all this work to do to get back to feeling OK, it was really overwhelming,” he continued,” he said per E! News.

FKA Twigs revealed that she had to get help when the going got tough for her. Although she’s now well into her healing process, the singer said she’s suing LaBeouf “to change the conversation and the stigma around domestic abuse.”
