CONCORD, NH – A shooting at a New Hampshire psychiatric hospital on Friday ended with one shooter dead and at least one person injured, authorities said.
A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that in addition to the shooter, one person was shot in the lobby. The official was not authorized to publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.
One patient was taken to Concord Hospital on Friday for treatment, said Dawn Beers, public affairs manager. The patient’s condition was not given. At a news conference late Friday, police said the shooting was contained to the front lobby and the patient was safe.
State police said there were “multiple victims” in an alert issued on social media late Friday afternoon, but did not provide a number and did not say if anyone had died.

The New Hampshire Hospital in Concord, which has about 185 beds, is the only state-run psychiatric hospital for adults in the state. It is located in the heart of Concord, near Concord High School, various state agencies and the county courthouse. It is located on a large campus consisting of more than one hundred acres (40.5 hectares) of land.

Democratic US Representative Annie Kuster called the shooting “horrific” in a statement and asked people to stay away from the hospital while police worked at the scene.
“Thank you to the State Police Officers who responded to the scene so quickly,” Kuster said in a statement. “My thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the Concord community.”
Other members of the state’s congressional delegation also issued statements of support.
“The state immediately moved, and first responders and law enforcement are on the scene,” Gov. Chris Sununu said in a statement. “We will provide as many details as possible as this situation unfolds.”
Friday’s shooting is the latest act of violence at a US hospital. Medical centers across the country have struggled to adapt to the growing threat, which has helped make health care one of the most violent fields in the country.
