Sigourney Weaver has shut down any hopes fans had of seeing her star as Ellen Ripley again in the “Alien” franchise. The actor played the character in four installments of the film and won critical acclaim for his performance.
Explaining why she no longer wants to play the role, Weaver shared that “that ship has sailed,” adding that she has “done her time in space.” In 2021, he revealed that the “Aliens” sequel was the “most satisfying” saga for his character.

In an interview with Total Movies magazine (via Rader game,) Weaver revealed that she has no plans to reprise her role, Ripley, in “Alien” even if the opportunity presents itself in the near future.
“There are all kinds of young actors taking on roles like this,” he said, per Insider. “And there was ‘Alien’ that I wanted to do with Neill Blomkamp, and we couldn’t do it, but, you know, that ship has sailed. I’m very happy doing what I do. I put my time in space.”
The actor received a lot of critical acclaim for his part in the debut installment, where he and the crew of his ship the Nostromo were hunted by massive extraterrestrials known as Xenomorphs.
Following the film’s success, Weaver was brought back to reprise his role in three more installments, “Aliens” (1986), “Alien 3” (1992), and “Alien Resurrection” (1997).

The film collection has since turned into a cult classic, mainly due to its iconic female character, Ripley.
On this point, Weaver gave credit to original “Alien” director Ridley Scott and writer Dan O’Bannon for making the character something of a departure from conventional feminine characters at the time.
She said, “They made Ripley a woman, without making her this powerless creature. Because I think I’m very lucky. They’re men who created this female character, but they love and respect strong women.
Unsurprisingly, the “Alien” franchise spawned a media franchise of movies, books, video games and toys. It also led to a crossover with the Predator franchise, which led to the production of “Alien vs. Predator,” “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem,” and “Alien: Covenant.”

Weaver is meant to star in the fifth installment of the “Alien” franchise, which was allegedly in the works at one point, and is also set to see another co-star Michael Biehn return.
However, the film never got the green light for production despite expectations from fans. In 2017, Ridley Scott, who directed the first installment, confirmed that Fox had canceled the production of more films for the franchise.
“There was never a script. It was an idea that grew out of, I believe, a 10-page pitch, and I was meant to be a producer on that. And it didn’t grow,” said the director AlloCiné in an interview.
He continued, “Fox decided they didn’t want to do it, and that was it.”

Although fans may not get to see Weaver play Ripley again, the actress has fond memories of her time on set. In 2021, he revealed that of all the films in the series, the “Aliens” sequel, directed by James Cameron, was the most fulfilling for his character.
“The best story built for that character was in ‘Aliens,’ just because [Cameron] has an amazing story structure,” said the actor, recalling the film’s narrative, per IndieWire.
“To bring this character out of oversleeping, have no one believe him, have him cast into this land of limbo where no one believes he and his family died. The whole setup for Ripley in ‘Aliens’ and then what she ends up doing and… finding this new family at the end. The whole structure of the story, to me, is gold.”
