Six-legged dog gets surgery after over $19K in donations

He gets a little help from his human friends.

A six-legged dog found abandoned in a parking lot last fall was able to undergo surgery thanks to the support of Good Samaritans from around the world, who donated more than $19,000 for the procedure, the BBC reported.

In September, the then 11-week-old spaniel Ariel was found in Pembrokeshire, a county in south-west Wales, with two extra legs.

She was named after the “Little Mermaid,” because of the way the two extra legs join together to resemble a Disney princess’s tail.

The Cocker Spaniel also has an extra vulva and one kidney, all of which require complex medical procedures.

The surgery was made possible by a fundraiser launched by Greenacres Animal Rescue, where Ariel was taken to where she was found.

The surgeon was able to save all four of his “normal” limbs, and avoid amputation of one of them.

“Due to having two hip joints on one side, Ariel’s pelvis never formed properly,” Mikey Lawlor, founder of Greenacres Rescue, told the outlet.

“As a result, his normal back right leg has almost no muscle tone, so there is a possibility that it will also have to be torn off. Thankfully that has not been the case as it shows signs of strengthening in recent months.”

“The procedure went well and Ariel took it all in stride,” a veterinarian at Lankford Small Animal Referral Hospital said on Facebook.

When Ariel is released from hospital, she will return to her foster family in west Wales — and undergo “a few weeks of physiotherapy” before finding a permanent place to call home.

“The response we’ve had to Ariel’s story so far, including calls and emails from as far away as New York and Australia, has been incredible,” Lawlor told the outlet. “So I have no doubt he will be caught.”
