Sofia Vergara’s latest drama series has run into unexpected legal trouble just days before its premiere.
The Colombian actress is the star of the upcoming Netflix project “Griselda,” a show inspired by the life of notorious Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco. However, fans may never see Vergara’s portrayal of the “Cocaine Godmother” as the late underworld figure’s children filed a lawsuit to stop the series from airing.
Sofia Vergara Sued By Griselda Blanco’s Son For Unauthorized Use Of Family Images
The “Modern Family” cast is named as a defendant in a new legal document with Netflix over the unauthorized use of the Blanco family’s images and likenesses in their upcoming series.
In the lawsuit, Griselda’s children asked for an injunction to block the release of the show, arguing that Netflix had ripped off their family’s story and inserted it into the plot of their show without permission. The late drug lord’s son, Michael, explained that several men approached him to interview him about his story and his mother.
These discussions allegedly went on for years, from 2009 to 2022. Michael claims these men wanted to develop his story into a book and show, noting that they told him they would start promoting it around Hollywood in 2016.

True to their word, they pitched it to producers before meeting with Netflix about the project. Michael claims the streaming giant is interested in making a show about Griselda; however, they refused to use his narrative or any negotiations from the interviews he had conducted.
Despite Netflix’s claims, Michael eventually learned that their upcoming “Griselda” series used his narrative and much of the material he gave to the men who consulted him. However, Cocaine Godmother is not credited for the information and was not paid for it.
The unauthorized use of the narrative and her family’s likeness is why Michael and his siblings are suing Vergara and Netflix. Griselda’s children insist that the show should not be released because depicting their images without their permission violates their rights.
The lawsuit reportedly does not say Netflix does not have the right to create a show about their late mother, given her status as a public figure. However, Griselda’s children believe they can challenge the series because it allegedly depicts them in some capacity.
All About Sofia Vergara’s ‘Griselda’ Drama Series
The trailer for Vergara’s new project captures the Colombian actress in a new light as she dramatically transforms into a notorious drug lord. The 51-year-old shed his comedic image for a tougher exterior that screams La Jefa (“The Boss”).
He is the main lead of the series and an executive producer on the project, which is scheduled to be released on Netflix on January 25. The drama series will feature six hour-long episodes created by Eric Newman and Andrés Baiz.
The creator’s name may sound familiar to fans as they are part of the team behind the hit show “Narcos”. Newman, Baiz, Doug Miro, Ingrid Escajeda and Carlo Bernard serve as executive producers along with Luis Balaguer with Latin World Entertainment.
Newman raved about their new project in an interview, claiming Griselda had been on his mind for a long time. “From the early days of my research for what became Narcos, [Griselda] jumped out at me as an interesting character,” he explained to TUDUM, adding:
“I always try to humanize complicated people, many of whom have been considered evil, and Griselda offers the greatest challenge and opportunity.”
The upcoming series, inspired by the infamous Cocaine Godmother, follows the story of a doting mother who created one of the most profitable cartels in history. It will showcase how Griselda uses a “lethal mixture of savagery and unexpected charm” to balance her family and business responsibilities.
Although the famous character is different from any of Vergara’s previous roles, Newman praised her portrayal of the notorious drug lord, saying:
“She was perfect for the role –– not only because she, like Griselda, was a single mother who came to America from Colombia with nothing and built an empire –– but because she was not expected to. [so].”
“Sofia was imagined one way –– a beautiful, brilliant comedic actress –– and she’s more than that,” said the series’ co-creator.
