New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, whose campaign was backed by left-leaning billionaire George Soros, angered conservatives and gun owners after she issued an emergency order suspending the right to carry firearms in public in Albuquerque and surrounding counties for at least 30 day.
The Democratic governor said he felt compelled to take action after several recent shootings — including the death of an 11-year-old boy outside a minor league baseball stadium this week.
“Gun violence kills between 2 and 3 children every month in NM – every single one of these deaths is unjustified and they must stop,” Lujan Grisham writes Friday on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Grisham’s actions drew backlash on social media, especially from X’s owner, Elon Musk, who was unequivocal.

“At the risk of stating the obvious, willfully violating the Constitution is next-level illegality,” Musk posted on X. “How quickly can this person be removed from office?”
“Not only is Michelle Lujan Grisham stupid, but she’s also a Marxist through and through,” conservative pundit Graham Ledger writes.
“According to him, constitutional rights are not absolute,” wrote ‘Just Some Lady.’ “They are subject to his opinion. Unreliable!”

Lujan Grisham, 63, who took office in 2019, said state police would be required to enforce the temporary ban but Albuquerque police Chief Harold Medina said he would not.
Bernalillo County Sheriff John Allen said he was uncomfortable about it because it raised too many questions about constitutional rights.
The firearms moratorium, classified as an emergency public health order, applies to open and concealed carry in most public places, from city sidewalks to city recreation parks.
The top-ranking Republicans of the state Senate condemned the governor’s actions.

“A child is killed, the perpetrator is still at large, and what does the governor do? He … targeted law-abiding citizens with an unconstitutional gun order,” said Sen. Greg Baca of Belen.
When asked by a reporter whether the temporary ban was unconstitutionalLujan Grisham said: ‘With one exception.
That is, if there is an emergency and I have declared an emergency for a temporary period, I can use additional powers. No constitutional right in my view is intended to be absolute.”
Lujan Grisham admitted his decision was controversial.

“I welcome the debate and fight about how to make New Mexico safer,” he said at a press conference, flanked by law enforcement officials, including the district attorney for the Albuquerque area.
“I’ve warned everyone that we expect a direct challenge, maybe as you write this we get a challenge, and that’s how it’s supposed to work.”
Lujan Grisham cited several recent shootings in Albuquerque as a reason to issue the order.
Among them is the suspected road rage shooting Wednesday outside a minor league baseball stadium that killed 11-year-old Froyland Villegas and critically injured a woman when their vehicle was hit by bullets as people left the game.

Last month, a 5-year-old girl was shot dead, allegedly by four teenagers, while sleeping in a motor home.
The girl was shot in the head and later died in hospital.
The governor also cited the August death of a 13-year-old Taos County girl who was shot and killed by a 14-year-old boy using her father’s gun while they were at her home, authorities said.
Since 2019, Lujan Grisham has signed numerous laws restricting access to firearms, including the 2020 “red flag” law that allows police or sheriff’s deputies to ask a court to temporarily remove guns from people who may harm themselves or others, continued background -checks are required for almost all private firearm sales.
He also signed a ban on firearms for people under permanent protection orders for domestic violence.
