Sotheby’s is a scandal for this one! They are selling the bed that Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward had (and used) in their sex room.

The bed Newman wrote about in his memoir is up for grabs thanks to a private auction house. Their latest collection is called “A Life & Legacy: The Joanne Woodward & Paul Newman Collection.”
In case you don’t know why the bed is so important, Newman made this point in his memoirs, published posthumously in 2022. He and his wife, Woodward shared a “F**k Hut”, a place he created in their home just for them to have children.
His wife surprised him with the room when he returned to Beverly Hills from working on a movie. “‘I call it the F**k Hut,’ he said, proudly,” Newman says in his book. “It was done with love and joy. Even when my kids came over, we’d go to the F**k Hut a few nights a week and just be intimate and loud and ribald.”

The main feature of the room is, of course, the bed. “thrift store double bed” with brass frame. The actual mattress is not for sale, thank god but the brass frame is up for grabs and Sotheby’s is confident in its ability to withstand a lot of “movement” even after years.
The auction doesn’t start until May 31 but the opening bid price for the bed is already up and it looks like it will start at USD 1,000.

A description for the bed on Sotheby’s website says, “This ordinary looking double bed was found and purchased by Joanne at a thrift store, and kept in the Newman home.” They describe it as a “cast iron and painted copper bed frame from the couple’s famous F**k Hut.”
Also for sale is a sex book that the couple kept in their bedroom with seven titles based on erotica to be exact. The couple earned this throughout the 60s after they got married. His titles include: “The Joy of Sex”, “The Complete Book of Erotic Art, Volumes 1 and 2”, and “The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana”.

Selling the bed is exciting enough but knowing what’s going on in it before the purchase is… unusual. “Girls thought I was a joke,” but that changed after he met his wife. “Joanne gave birth to a sexual creature,” Newman wrote. “We leave traces of lust everywhere. Hotels and public parks and Hertz Rent-A-Cars.”
But mostly, in that bed and supposedly for days. So, if you have $1,000, you can own the bed frame that was the centerpiece of Newman and Woodward’s wedding. The actor died in 2008 and Woodward is still alive and 93 years old! They have been married for 50 years and most of the items up for auction come from their family home in Westport, Connecticut. They lived there for the majority of their marriage.
Newman wrote of the marriage and their time in the house together:
“There was a glue that bound us then, and for the rest of our lives together. And the glue is this: Anything seems possible. The good, the bad, and the beautiful. With everyone else, some things can be done, but not everything. For us, the promise of everything has been there since the beginning.”
