South Dakota governor Kristi Noem banished from tribal land over proposed border security maneuver

South Dakota’s Native American tribes are driving Republican Gov. Kristi Noem off her land in protest of her administration considering plans to send resources to Texas to improve border security.

Oglala Sioux Tribe President Frank Star blasted Noem for publicly thinking about sending razor wire and staff to the border, suggesting he run for vice president.

“For Oyate’s safety, effective immediately, you are hereby Expelled from the homeland of the Oglala Sioux Tribe!” Star declared last Friday, using “Oyate,” a word that means country.

The Star, which states the Oglala Sioux are a “sovereign nation that is neither a Democratic nor a Republican tribe,” asserts that many of the immigrants crossing the southern border are Native Americans seeking “jobs and a better life.”

“[They] does not deserve to be insulted and mistreated by people like the Governor [Abbott] and his group,” he said.

Noem addressed state lawmakers last Wednesday where he said the US was facing an “invasion” and warned that Mexican drug cartels were “waging war against our country.”

The 52-year-old Republican ignored the eviction and the Star’s rebuke of him.

“It is unfortunate that President (Star) Comes Out chose to bring politics into the discussion about the effects of our federal government’s failure to enforce federal laws on the southern border and on tribal lands,” he said in a statement.

“In my speech to the legislature earlier this week, I told the truth about the ravages of drugs and human trafficking on our state and our people,” he added.

“Our tribal reservation bears the brunt of it in South Dakota. Stating this fact is not meant to blame the tribes in any way – they are the victims here.”

“I stand ready to work with any Native American tribe in our state to build such a relationship.”

While speaking at a meeting with the state legislative assembly last Wednesday, Noem briefly discussed the drug situation affecting tribal communities in Mount Rushmore State.

He also expressed his intention to support the Oglala Sioux Tribe in a lawsuit demanding more federal law enforcement support.

Last year, Star declared a state of emergency over the crime that plagued the Pine Ridge Reservation. The federal government has a duty to provide law enforcement support, a federal judge determined last year.

A chorus of Republican governors has backed Texas Governor Greg Abbott in his efforts with the Biden administration.

Noem has deployed National Guard troops to the Mexican border three times, as have several other Republican governors, including failed GOP presidential candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Noem’s name has been floated as a potential vice presidential candidate for the GOP front-runner, former President Donald Trump.

He endorsed it last year and campaigned for it in Iowa last month.
