South Korea warns against social media trend of eating fried toothpicks

A health warning from South Korea’s food ministry is urging people not to eat fried toothpicks made from starch shaped like curly fries, after the practice went viral in social media posts.

A video clip showing people taking fried starch toothpicks with seasonings such as powdered cheese has garnered thousands of likes and shares on TikTok and Instagram.

“Their safety as food has not been confirmed,” the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said in a post on Wednesday on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. “Please don’t eat (them).”

Videos of toothpicks, a hygiene product, being fried in oil and eaten went viral, he added.

Food coloring is used to give the toothpicks a green color, made from sweet potato or corn starch, which is seen as environmentally friendly and biodegradable.

Often used in restaurants in South Korea, it can also be used to take finger food.

Online eating shows, called “Mukbang”, which often show people eating excessive food or unusual dishes, are popular in South Korea.

“It’s so crunchy,” a TikTok user said in the video, munching on a fried toothpick.
