Squatters take over 1,200 homes in Atlanta, open illegal strip clubs and terrorize neighbors: ‘is this even America?’

Squatters are ruining entire neighborhoods in Atlanta and the police response to evictions is so slow, some homeowners have to pay harassment to leave.

Brazen squatters are even opening illegal strip clubs in properties they’ve taken over – one of 1,200 occupied homes in the city according to trade group the National Rental Housing Council (NRHC).

“I would be scared in Atlanta to lease one of my properties,” Matt Urbanski, who runs a local house cleaning company, told Bloomberg.

Urbanski’s company cleared houses for corporate landlords, and in some cases had to remove squatter properties.

Recently one of his employees was shot after trying to remove intruders from a property.

Simon Frost, CEO of large-scale landlord Tiber Capital Group, said there have been incidents of illegal occupants brandishing weapons and threatening neighbors that jeopardize the safety of neighborhoods and other residents, according to Bloomberg.

Evicting squatters in Atlanta is difficult, involving court backlog negotiations and strained police resources.

Meanwhile, online listings and virtual real estate agents are making it easier for squatters to identify vacant properties to break into.

In October, an Atlanta neighborhood found itself at the center of a scandal involving a squatter who turned a house into an illegal strip club, complete with weekend parties and even live horses on the property.

The drama unfolded in the South Fulton area when, where four individuals — DeAnthony Maddox, Jeremy Wheat, Kelvin Hall, and Tarahsjay Forde — settled without permission. Little did the neighbors know, the 4,000-square-foot, five-bedroom, three-bathroom home would become a hotbed of illegal activity.

The slum dwellers run dark strip clubs, hold noisy parties and even organize street car races, ruining the neighborhood for others, according to local reports.

“They will get live horses. One day they had a live horse,” a neighbor told Atlanta station WSB-TV TV2.

Eventually a SWAT team had to clear the house and recovered two stolen cars, a stolen weapon and a stolen credit card from the property, according to local reports.

A neighbor told The Post that they were afraid to go on vacation because if the squatters knew the house was empty, they would just move in.

“Is this America again? We are the owners of the house and we can’t do anything about the intruders?” The neighbor said in frustration.

In another incident, military officer Lt. Col. Dahlia Daure found a convicted criminal squatting in her house.

Daure, an Army officer, returns to his property to find squatters living in his sprawling $500,000 residence while he is away on active duty.

She previously told WSB-TV she came home to find a man named Vincent Simon living in her home.

Simon, a man who has been convicted of gun, drug and theft charges, refuses to leave the house.

When Daure reported the unwanted man at her home to the police, they initially told her their hands were tied because it was a “civil matter.” Serving him eviction papers didn’t help either.

After using vague laws to finally get the police involved, the police found guns and drugs in the house.

“To find out that this person moved into my house right after I finished renovating — it’s really aggravating and I’m angry,” Daure told FOX.
