‘Star Wars’ Star Diego Luna Reveals He’s Done Playing Cassian Andor

Star Wars actor Diego Luna believes that he will finish playing Cassian Andor in a galaxy far, far away after Disney+’s live-action series “Andor” ends its second season.

Luna first played a role in 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” which explained how the Rebellion got the plan that allowed them to blow up the Death Star in 1977’s “A New Hope,” which was the first Star Wars movie ever made.

Although “Rogue One” introduced many fan-favorite characters, many of them perished on Scarif, which made it impossible to continue their stories. Fortunately, Lucasfilm decided to give one Rebel leader, Cassian Andor, his own two-season prequel series to help flesh out his character. Spanning 24 episodes, fans will get to see what Cassian Andor was like in the five years before “Rogue One.”

While the series, helmed by “The Bourne Legacy” creator Tony Gilroy, has received widespread praise from fans and critics, Luna recently revealed that he was done playing Cassian Andor after “Andor” finished its second season.

In an interview on Entertainment Weekly’s Star Wars podcast Dagobah Dispatch, Diego Luna revealed that he and the “Rogue One” cast had joked about returning to the franchise after the film premiered six years ago.

“I’d be lying if I told you I never thought about it,” Luna said. “Obviously I thought about it, and we joked a lot on set about the possibility of coming back. And obviously there would be a prequel, but I never considered it a real possibility.”

Luna said she “doesn’t feel right” to think too much about the possibility of her character getting a prequel series, adding, “I don’t like this thing these days that this new format brings, where people always expect more. You go on a show, and you get hired to do something, and you’re always thinking, ‘Oh, I wish there was a second season,’ or, ‘I wish there was a part two.’”

For the 42-year-old Mexican actor, Luna spoke about the importance of living in the moment and focusing on the executive of the role he was given without worrying too much about the potential of playing the role again in the future.

“For me, I learned in my life that it’s about living in the present. It’s about enjoying what you do. And for the sake of my mental health and clarity, I would say things have to have a beginning and an end for me to understand them and enjoy them and enjoy the journey,” Luna said. “To this day I can tell you, I’ve never gone into a project with the ambition that it will last longer or that it will go somewhere other than what I have in front of me.”

That live-in-the-now mentality is what helped Diego Luna enjoy working on “Rogue One,” since the actors knew their characters wouldn’t survive their battle against the Empire.

“For me, it was pretty clear that Rogue One was a movie that I had to enjoy from start to finish. In the end, I’ll promote it and then go back to my life and do my thing. And that was it,” said Luna. “And it was interesting, because then I was offered Andor, but with the same premise, because Andor had a clear ending, which was Rogue One. Once Tony Gilroy came up with the idea of going back five years, there’s only five years to tell.”

While there was always the possibility of a prequel series to “Andor,” Luna quickly shut down the idea that she would return for a prequel prequel. “No, impossible,” he said. “It must be someone else, man. I’m not getting any younger, so it must be someone else.”

Although he doesn’t plan to reprise his role in any future Star Wars projects, he still says he’s had a “wonderful journey” with his character. “For me, this is it. It’s been a beautiful journey now because I have 24 episodes, 24 shorter films, to tell Cassian’s origin story and how he became the man we met in Rogue One,” he said.

Focusing on the present once again allows Diego Luna to make the most of his final role with the character and the show as a whole. “It has a beginning and an end. Therefore, I can understand it and I can enjoy the ride and the picture as we have,” he said.

“I think that’s necessary, otherwise you’re always trying to go somewhere else. I do not think so. All the people and coaches who tell people, ‘Oh, imagine yourself in 10 years, where you want to be. Project that and work for it.’ That’s nonsense,” he continued.

“Worried about what you did today. Do it in the best way possible. Enjoy the journey. Make sure you give your best, and you give everything you have,” he added. “And something interesting will happen if you do. And, if not, it’s worth the trip. So about now, it’s time.”

New episodes of “Andor” will be released on Disney+ every Wednesday.
