Staten Island Chuck says get ready for spring

Warmer days may be on the way, New York City’s own rat meteorologist predicted early Friday, minutes after Punxsutawney Phil predicted a similarly sunny outlook.

Staten Island Chuck, also known as Charles G. Hogg, didn’t see his shadow early Friday morning at the Staten Island Zoo’s annual Groundhog Day event as excited children could be heard chanting “Early Spring, Early Spring.”

As has been the tradition for centuries, if Chuck sees his shadow, New York City will be left with another six weeks of brutal, cold temperatures.

But with no visible shadow on Friday, Chuck was on the side of a majority of New Yorkers who voted in a zoo poll saying they thought warm weather might be on the way.

As he revealed his prediction, New York City representatives and zoo officials smiled widely as they held up signs that read “Spring is here.”

That’s exactly what Punxsutawney Phil predicted, who also failed to see his shadow at Gobbler’s Knob in western Pennsylvania.

That spells good news for those ready to ditch their winter coats, as Chuck has been right about the extended forecast every time for the past 14 years, according to the Staten Island Advance.

The last time Chuck was wrong was in 2009 — the same year he bit former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Fox News meteorologist Greg Diamond said that Chuck and Phil’s forecast will certainly look accurate in the coming weeks — although the bright outlook may not last long.

“It looks like in the next two weeks, winter is pretty much at a standstill,” he told The Post on Friday.

But, he said, the final weeks of February leading into March may once again bring cooler temperatures to the region.

This year’s celebration, however, also has a solemn note – it marks the 10th anniversary of the death of the beloved groundhog, Charlotte.

Former mayor Bill DeBlasio put down the ground chicken in 2014, when the anxious rodents tried to squirm free.

Charlotte died of internal injuries a week later.
