He began his professional baseball career with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The club drafted him in the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft. He began his career with the Lancaster JetHawks minor league baseball club in 2006. He batted .389 with 10 home runs for the squad in the California Class A-Advanced League. Later, he was promoted to the Tennessee Smokies minor league baseball club and played in the Class AA Southern League. Major League Baseball selected him to participate in the All-Star Futures Game that same year.

On July 15, 2006, he made his major league debut against the Milwaukee Brewers baseball club. He batted .316 with 5 home runs and 23 RBI this season. In 2007, he had the worst season of his career, hitting .238 with 12 home runs. – He returned in 2008, hitting for the cycle against St. Louis Cardinals.
