On Thursday morning, the “Carrie” creator took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to air her thoughts on Bill Maher’s plans to return to “Real Time.” He left a brief comment, writing, “This is how strikes are broken.”

“There’s nothing worse than a strike breaker,” one fan agreed. “You can tell a person’s social class by their attitude towards strike breakers. If they sympathize with them, they are probably middle or upper class, if not, they are probably working class.” Another follower wrote, “I myself have no plans to watch Real Time. I hope others feel the same.”

They’re also losing ground to a lot of small creators who are stepping up to fill the void,” commented one follower. “Looks like Bill Maher saw the writing on the wall. Plus, the strike is crushing the side hustlers who have to go back to work to support their families.”

“Successful strikes require that those who strike have something irreplaceable to offer and hold. Good stories are being written elsewhere. With competition, the market sets the price, and that market is bigger than Hollywood,” another follower wrote, leading to a lengthy debate in the comments.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk also commented on Bill Maher’s return to “Real Time,” reminding him that he has a large following on social media that he can also tap into. “It might be worth posting some stuff on this platform,” he wrote. “The reach is enormous.”

In his statement, Bill Maher announced, “Real Time will return, unfortunately, without writers or writing. It’s been five months, and it’s time to get people back to work. Writers have important issues that I sympathize with, and hope they are addressed to their satisfaction, but they are not the only people with issues, problems and concerns. Despite some help from me, most of the staff are struggling mightily. We all hoped this would end after Labor Day, but that day has come and gone, and still nothing seems -what happen.”

“I love my writers, I’m one of them, but I’m not ready to lose a whole year and see so many people down the line suffer so much. I will respect the spirit of the strike by not doing the monologue, the table sheet, the New Rules or the editorial, the writing that I am proud of in Real Time,” he continued.

“And I will say it in front of the audience: the show I will do without my writer will not be as good as our usual show, period. But the heart of the show is an extraordinary panel discussion that aims to cut through the predictable nonsense and partisanship, and that will continue,” he concluded. “The show will not disappoint.”

The Writers Guild of America quickly took to social media to condemn the decision. “Bill Maher’s decision to return to the air while his Federation is on strike is disappointing. If he goes ahead with his plans, he needs to respect more than the ‘spirit of the strike,’” they said write in a brief statement on Wednesday night. “As a member of the WGA, @BillMaher is responsible for following strike rules and not performing any writing services.”

“It’s hard to imagine how @RealTimers could go forward without breaking the WGA strike rules,” they continued. “WGA will picket this show.” They ended their post with the hashtags #WGAstrike and #WGAstrong.
