Although “News of the World” director Paul Greengrass will direct the feature, it doesn’t yet have a studio attached to it. However, given how successful adaptations of King’s work have been in recent years, it looks like a bidding war for the film rights will be contentious.

In a brief statement, King said, “Needless to say, I’m a fan of Paul Greengrass and thought he was a great choice for this film.”

Greengrass added, “Fairy Tale is a work of genius. A classic adventure story as well as a disturbing contemporary allegory.”

King reportedly got the idea for the novel early in the COVID-19 pandemic, when he asked himself, “What could you write that would make you happy?”

“As if my imagination had been waiting for a question to be asked, I saw a vast, isolated city—isolated but alive,” he wrote. “I saw empty streets, haunted buildings, gargoyle heads lying upside down on the street. I saw a smashed statue (what I didn’t know, but I finally did). I saw a huge, sprawling palace with a glass tower so high the tip pierced the clouds. Those images bring out the story I want to tell.”

While it remains to be seen how faithful the adaptation will be to the novel, the book’s synopsis reads as follows:

“Charlie Reade seemed like a normal high school kid, great at baseball and football, a good student. But he carries a heavy burden. His mother was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was ten, and grief drove his father to drink. Charlie learns how to take care of himself—and his father. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and his aging master, Howard Bowditch, a hermit in a big house on top of a big hill, with a locked barn behind the house. Sometimes a strange sound comes out of it.”

“Charlie starts doing work for Mr. Bowditch and loses his passion for Radar. Later, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape that tells a story that no one will believe. What Bowditch knew, and had kept secret for the rest of his life, was that inside the shed was a portal to another world.”

“The narration of the King in Tales soared. This is a wonderful and terrifying story in which good is pitted against great evil, and a heroic boy—and his dog—must lead the battle.”

“A very entertaining novel about Fairy Tale characters gone bad—-VERY bad. The story revolves around a brave teenager and his beloved dog,” another fan added. “The bond and friendship they share, as they travel through alternate worlds full of wonder and evil, just draws me in and keeps me there. There are surprises at every turn. Keep me up until the morning. Can’t put it down!”

“It’s been a while since I last read a King novel, but this one felt like coming home,” wrote another customer. “Immediately gripped, and (unfortunately) devoured the first 15% of the book in a few hours (which caused me a lot of sleep).”
