A 15-year-old student was fatally stabbed by a 14-year-old classmate Monday during a wild fight caught on camera inside a North Carolina high school on Monday.
A fight in the gym at Southeast Raleigh High School also left a second student, 16, at the hospital with non-life-threatening stab wounds, according to local reports.
“Both victims were transported to area hospitals,” Raleigh police chief Estella Patterson said during a press conference. “Unfortunately one victim died from his injuries.”
“This is a very unfortunate incident that has happened today,” he added. “One that really bothers us.”
The teenager accused of stabbing two of his peers has been arrested and charged with murder on a juvenile petition, WRAL reported, citing authorities.
Part of the fight caught on camera shows two students facing each other before a teenager in a black jacket throws a punch at the student in a red jacket who then returns with a punch of his own.
The fight then spilled into the gym as other students quickly joined the fray.
One student is dead and another student is injured after a fight at a Southeast Raleigh high school.
During the escalating chaos, one of the students appeared to lunge at two teenagers with a sharp object before fleeing, according to footage obtained by WRAL and CBS 17.
The identity of the victim and the suspect have not been released.
Sherelle McLaughlin told WRAL that her son, who was allegedly stabbed, was only defending himself.
A teenager was arrested and charged with murder after being accused of stabbing two of his peers.
He also said he didn’t believe he brought the knife to school, but got it from someone else in the building.
“The overall situation is very bad,” McLaughlin said. “I feel sorry for the rest of the family but in return, I feel sorry for my son because he is fighting for his life. It’s not a fair fight. I don’t think it should have happened that way.”
The school will be closed Tuesday as students deal with the deaths of classmates and the district reviews safety protocols.
“Schools should be safe places for our students and staff,” said Wake County Superintendent Robert Taylor. “What happened here today is unacceptable.”
