Student convicted of murder for mowing down fiancé, dragging him 500 feet with car

A United Kingdom student has been convicted of manslaughter for dragging his fiancée under his car during an argument that witnesses say escalated into a twisted game of “chicken”.

Alice Wood, 23, was found guilty of manslaughter on Tuesday in the death of Ryan Watson, 24, after a three-week trial at Chester Crown Court in Cheshire, United Kingdom.

According to authorities, Wood hit Watson with his Ford Fiesta, dragging her more than 500 feet under the car after he “clicked” with another woman at a party on May 6, 2022.

Witnesses described the altercation as a game of “chicken,” in which an enraged Wood repeatedly hit Watson, dragging him 158 meters before stopping to call for help.

The university student finally stopped to ask someone “Please call an ambulance, I think I hit my boyfriend.”

Although Wood claimed his partner’s death was a “tragic accident”, surveillance footage showed him getting into his car, starting the engine and backing into Watson several times before finally hitting him.

“The footage shows Ryan walking away from the collision but Wood deliberately drove towards him a third time, hitting him and causing him to go under the car,” police said in a statement.

He then drove more than 500 feet with his body pinned under his car.

Both Wood and Watson had consumed alcohol before the altercation and Wood later failed a roadside breath test, police said.

Paramedics pronounced Watson dead at the scene. After his arrest, Wood told officers, “It’s okay, I deserve it.”

In a police statement, Watson’s grieving family expressed gratitude that justice had been served and said they were “proud” of all he had achieved in his 24 years of life.

“It is difficult to see the CCTV footage of our son being hit by his car repeatedly, then dragged onto the road still trapped under his car. I can’t imagine how scared Ryan was at that moment,” they said.

“The one person Ryan trusted the most was the one who took his life in such a violent way.”

Woods is set to be sentenced on Jan. 29.
