Surfer dies in shark ‘encounter’ in Hawaii

A surfer in Hawaii died over the weekend from injuries sustained in a “shark encounter,” authorities said.

Jason Carter, 39, of Haiku, was pulled from Paia Bay off the 93 Hana Highway beach area at 11:19 a.m. Saturday, the Maui Police Department said.

Ocean Safety officials took Carter to shore on a jet ski, and first responders performed life-saving measures on the beach before the victim was transferred to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he later died, officials said.

Details on the exact nature of Carter’s injuries were not immediately available.

The investigation into the tragedy – which has been categorized as a “multiple incident” – is still ongoing.

Maui police did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for clarification on the specifics of the fatal encounter.

Baldwin Beach Park and Bayi Beach, near the scene of Carter’s alleged shark encounter, were closed Saturday following the incident, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser said.

Shark warning signs were also placed on the one-mile beach on both sides of the bay, the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources said.

Before moving to Hawaii, Carter worked several seasons at ski resorts in Oregon and Colorado, his Facebook profile showed.

He is remembered by friends on social media as a successful outsider.

“A legend was gone yesterday, doing what he loved!” one writes.

“Damn. Another amazing friend and amazing person gone. Jay Carter rest easy my friend,” added another.
