Surf’s up, Santa! Hundreds of festive surfers hit the Florida shore

Surf, Santa!

Hundreds of surfers dressed as Kris Kringle hit the waves at Cocoa Beach, Fla. Sunday for the lively celebration of Surfing Santas.

As red suits over wetsuits and boring white beards filled the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean, thousands of spectators gathered on the sand to drink Bloody Marys and watch surfeit Santas hang ten, footage showed.

“We started Suring Santas in 2009,” George Trosset, 70, told Florida Today after being named “Citizen of the Year” by a local store.

“This will be our 15th year of holding the event. If you had told me 15 years ago that Surfing Santas would become a viral news event, creating billions of smiles around the world, I would have looked at you like you were crazy, but it happened.”

The annual event raises $100,000 for the Florida Surf Museum and Grind for Life, which helps people diagnosed with cancer travel for treatment, according to Trosset.

It culminates with an afternoon “paddle out” in honor of Jimmy Buffett, Florida’s tropical recreation and relaxation magnate, who died earlier this year.

It was expected to move up the beach to Shepard Park near the hotel this year, but organizers changed course after a public outcry by locals from Cocoa Beach, which is lined with lively beachside bars and restaurants.

“Before Santa delivers the toys and presents, he’s off to catch the waves on Christmas Eve morning. Isn’t it beautiful?,” the event’s promotional material was read.
