Survivors of Lewiston mass shooting offered free tuition at Maine colleges

Survivors of the deadliest mass shooting in Maine history, along with family members of the 18 people killed, have been given the chance to attend college for free.

Lewiston’s Strong Tuition Waiver will cover expenses for more than 80 victims affected by the Oct. 25 shooting. when crazed gunman Robert Card goes on a rampage shooting spree at a bar and bowling alley — sparking a tense two-day manhunt for the killer.

“By all accounts, those who were tragically killed were very devoted to their families and worked hard to provide a strong future for them,” University of Maine System Chancellor Dannel Malloy said in a statement today.

“While nothing will bring them back, the University of Maine System believes that the best way we can honor the memories of those taken too soon is to ensure that their loved ones can easily access post-secondary education and opportunities.”

“Aside from the unimaginable grief, we know there are also tremendous concerns about financial and other responsibilities for those directly affected, especially for those who suddenly become single parents or who are physically injured by a mass shooting. this terrible.”

The scholarship fund will cover tuition and fees for spouses and biological, adopted and stepchildren of those killed in the massacre, as well as 31 injured Maine residents, to pursue a bachelor’s degree at any of seven public universities Maine.

In-state tuition and fees at UMS averaged around $10,200 this academic year, officials said.

UMS also established a public donation fund that will cover other expenses for survivors beyond their tuition, such as room, board and books.

Most of the 18 people killed in the Lewison mass shooting were young to middle-aged parents.

Card suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound, which the medical examiner said was “probably” inflicted eight to 12 hours before his body was found.

The motive for the madness continues to remain a mystery, although officials are investigating Card’s extensive history of mental health issues.

Card had been known to law enforcement for months as family members and others became increasingly concerned about his mental state.
