Suspect in Detroit synagogue leader’s murder released without charges

A suspect who had been arrested in the fatal stabbing of a prominent Detroit synagogue leader was released without charge after 72 hours, according to reports.

Police arrested the man late Tuesday in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and released him Friday without being charged in the Oct. 21 murder of Samantha Woll, the Detroit Free Press reported.

Sources told the outlet that the man was close to Woll and attended her funeral.

The release was made after police executed a search warrant at the suspect’s home this week.

Michigan law states suspects cannot be held without charge after three days.

The man’s defense team, Allison Kriger and Mark Kriger, confirmed his release, The Detroit News reported.

Investigators continue to look into “vague statements” he made to police about the stabbing.

Police declined to comment on the case and would not name the man.

“Details of the investigation must be kept confidential, including the suspect’s name,” Detroit Police said Thursday in statement on X. “Investigators are at a critical juncture in this case and are working tirelessly to bring this matter to closure.”

A day earlier, Detroit Police Chief James White said the arrests did not “represent the conclusion” of work in the case.

Woll, president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Detroit Synagogue and a “politically connected” activist, was found dead outside her home in the city’s Lafayette Park neighborhood, east of downtown.

His killing shook the city’s Jewish community, although investigators said they did not believe it was the result of a hate crime.
