Suspect in explosives attack on Japanese prime minister indicted for attempted murder, report says

Prosecutors in Japan charged a 24-year-old man on Wednesday with attempted murder and other charges in an explosive attack on Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in April, Japanese media reported.

Kishida was campaigning for an election in Wakayama in western Japan when a man threw a homemade pipe bomb at him. Kishida was not injured, but the other two were slightly injured.

After a three-month psychiatric evaluation of the suspect, prosecutors determined that Ryuji Kimura, 24, was mentally fit to stand trial and that the bomb used in the attack was lethal, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported.

Kyodo reports that court records show Kimura may be angry that he cannot file for candidacy in the 2022 election.

The attack comes about a year after former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot and killed while campaigning for an election.

Gun and bomb violence in Japan is extremely rare, and the attacks on Abe and Kishida shocked many in the country.
